Why play games? Because they are
fun, and a lot more besides. Following the rules...planning your next
move...acting as a team member...these are all “game” ideas that you will come across throughout your life.
Think about some of the games you
played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek.
Such games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, they
translate life into exciting dramas that teach children some of the basic rules
they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns
and cooperating (合作).
Many children's games have a
practical side.& Children around the world play games that prepare them
for work they will do as grown-ups.& For instance, some Saudi Arabian
children play a game called bones, which sharpens the hand-eye
coordination(协调) needed in hunting.
Many sports encourage national or
local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring athletes
from around the world together to take part in friendly competition. People who
watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire
country, not just the athlete who earned it. For countries experiencing natural
disasters or war, an Olympic win can mean so much.
Sports are also an event that unites
people. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents
play it—some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette
Iribarne, a Californian soccer player,& has discovered a way to spread
hope through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not
only soccer balls but also a promising future.
Next time you play your favorite
game or sport, think about why you enjoy it, what skills are needed, and
whether these skills will help you in other aspects of your life.

A couple of years
ago, before a trip to China, Nicole Davis and her US women's volleyball
teammates were warned about the prominence(显著、突出)of
coach“Jenny”Lang Ping in her native country.
“I was pushed over
by Chinese journalists while I was just trying to put my luggage on the bus,”said Davis.
Known as the “Iron
Hammer”for her punishing spikes(扣球), Lang made it
possible for China to dominate in the sport in the early 1980s. She was a key
player on China's 1984 Olympic gold medal winning team.
When the US team arrived for the Olympics, Lang, 48, who is from Beijing, had to take a different route to
avoid a crowd of reporters and fans.
Then came the
greatest moment to Lang:While the US team was playing in a packed gym, at least 8 000 Chinese fans unfurled an
American flag.
“That really says
it all,”Davis said,“They look at her as an icon(偶像). I'm& sure
it's hard for them to see her coaching another country, but they love her so
dearly that her success is their success.”
The loyalty of the
Chinese fans was tested on Friday, when China lost a match to the US.
“It's a pity that
China lost the match, but I'm still glad that Lang Ping's team won, since she
is the pride of China's volleyball,”said Liu Chengli,
a spectator.“We also cheered for Lang's victory.”
Lang said she just
tried to stay professional when the two teams meet. “It doesn't matter if we
play China or any other_team. It's the same.”Lang said.
Davis said she and her
teammates could not have imagined the passion for volleyball among Chinese
because the sport was lack of popularity in the US. The reception from Chinese
fans has touched the US players, said US volleyball player Lindsey Berg.
“It's such an
honor to be here and play for our coach here in China,”she said. “The amount of support that the Chinese give to her and
us has been tremendous. The whole event has been unbelievable.”

Music died here last spring, or
rather, it was killed by members of the school committee who ignored the
importance of music and drama as part of the high-school curriculum (课程).
The committee decided that
teaching students how to take a standardized test is more important than a
curriculum in which students can explore their interests in the arts as well as
academics. Because the school system is running out of funding, it needs to
make sure that students pass the test or even more money will be lost. If
students fail the state standardized test,it is not the fault of drama and music classes—they are failing
because the “academic” classes are not sufficient (充足的).
It is painful to think of how
many students will be discouraged from singing, acting, and playing instruments
because school programs are no longer offered. Many families cannot afford
private music lessons, and many potential musicians and artists may not find
their calling if they are not exposed to it in school. The fact that the school
committee thinks the arts are not worth the investment will certainly make some
students believe the arts are not worth their time or support and the cycle
will continue.
Teaching for a test does not shape students into
complete, well-rounded people. It blocks the natural sense to create and
express feelings through art—there is more to life than the analytical thinking
that math and English provide. What happens after a test? Sure, a student might
graduate, but they will have limited knowledge—certainly not a good preparation
for the real world.

The world itself is
becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means.
Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought
new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. To pollute means to
make things dirty. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it
and even hear it.
Man has been
polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the
problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land
was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place.
But this is no longer true.
Man is now slowly
polluting the whole world. Air pollution is still the most serious. It’s bad for all living things in
the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills
our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more
Many countries are
making rules to fight pollution. They stop people from burning coal in houses
and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution
by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy
traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less
air pollution.

clean. And we must take care of the rise in pollution at the same time.

The survey by
online brokerage(经纪公司)TD Ameritrade

savings goal for today’ s teens. The results showed 62 percent of teens aged 14

of adults who said they saved when they were teens.
Educators didn’t

person can make is an investment in themselves. ”
The survey

young. About 87 percent of teens say they save.
The results also
suggest 78 percent of teens said they want a plan that involves splitting the
cost of education with their parents. The willingness of teens to share the
price of their education suggests that they are aware of rising college costs,

More than 80
percent of teens reported that they attach the importance of education to
future success, compared with 56 percent of adults surveyed who say they felt
that way as teens.

Settled by
the Celts, invaded by the Romans and the Normans, and ruled by the English, Wales’ population has regularly changed over the ages. Wales, particularly South Wales, became a melting pot of European nationalities and cultures. At first workers
from England, Ireland and the rural areas of Wales rushed into the coalfields
of South Wales. By 1911, workers from Ireland, Italy and Spain had joined the industrial workforce there. Many of these newcomers were prepared to
work for less pay.
But during this period, workers, dissatisfied with regular pay cuts, poor
safety, the growing trend of employers to pay workers with tokens (代币), which
could only be spent in the company store, returned to the land. In 1891, the
rural population of Wales was about 616,000 and by 1911 just over 649,000
people lived and worked in these areas.
The rural population continues to grow slowly even today. People from richer
parts of the UK, particularly southern England, are buying holiday or
retirement homes in Wales. In some areas this has led to a shortage of
affordable(可负担的)
housing for local people. This, combined with the lack of employment prospects
in rural Welsh communities, has started a new movement of people in search of
jobs and homes into the towns and cities of Wales and to other parts of the UK and Europe.
As so many Welsh people have migrated to other countries over the last 200 years,
it’s really no surprise that many visitors come to see friends and relatives —
there were 229,000 visitors in 1998. These visitors strengthen their links to
their land of origin and continue to support the Welsh economy. During the hot
summer days, about 28% of the visitors visit the countryside and nearly 70%
visit the seaside.
41. Why was South Wales so attractive to people in the early 20th century?
A. Because
it was rich in many different kinds of culture.
B. Because
people could get the highest pay there.
C. Because
its coal industry needed a large number of workers.

people could buy holiday or retirement homes there.&
does the writer want to tell us in the second paragraph?
workers couldn’t get any pay for their work.
B. The rural
population of Wales didn’t decline at this time.
people got tired of city life at this time.
working conditions were terrible at this time.
43. From the
last paragraph, we learn that most visitors come to Wales for the purpose of
A. visiting
their friends and relatives
supporting the Welsh economy
C. enjoying
a cool and pleasant summer
the above&
would be the best title for the passage?
A. Tourism,
the main economic source of Wales.
B. Wales, a
land with a promising past and future.

American society is not nap(午睡)friendly. In fact, says David Dinges, a
sleep specialist at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. “There’s
even a ban against admitting we need sleep.” Nobody wants to be caught napping
or found asleep at work. A proverb says: “Some sleep five hours, nature
requires seven, laziness nine and wickedness(邪恶) eleven.”
Wrong! The way not to fall
asleep at work is to take naps when you need them. “We have to totally change
our attitude toward napping,” says Dr William Dement of Stanford University, the godfather of sleep research.
Last year a
national commission(委员会)
led by Dement put forward an “American sleep debt” which one
member said was as important as the national debt. The commission was concerned
about the dangers of sleepiness: people causing industrial accidents of falling
asleep while working. This may be why we have a new sleep policy in the White
House. According to recent reports, our President is trying to take a half-hour
nap every afternoon.
About 60 percent of American
adults nap when given the opportunity. We seem to have “a mid-afternoon quiet state”,
or “a secondary sleep gate”. Sleeping 15 minutes to two hours in the early
afternoon can reduce stress and make us refreshed. Clearly, we were born to
