Even if you are naturally shy, these three tricks will help you
to quickly build a new social circle in any new city.
1. Take pictures
One of the great things about taking pictures at an event or party
is that it gives you an excuse to get in touch with the person
later. Everybody loves seeing pictures of themselves, and it&s very
easy after taking a picture to say &If you&d like I can email it to
you&. This can be the seed that leads to new connections. The next
time you hear about a fun event email your new contacts to let them

you are in a conversation with someone else. Bring a book or
newspaper to read (this will make you feel less self-conscious).
Plus, having an interesting book with you will give others an

asking what their plans are. If they have a better plan you can
drop yours and join them. This will help establish you as someone
who is contributing value instead of just taking it (people want
this in a friend).
* Don&t let little things in life upset you or be a negative
person. People don&t want to be around someone like that!
36. ____ can give you an excuse to start new connections.

Astronauts aboard the space station celebrated a space first on
Wednesday by drinking water that had been recycled from their
urine(尿), sweat and water got from air. They said
&cheers,& clicked drinking bags
and toasted NASA workers on the ground.
The urine recycling system is needed for astronaut stations on
the moon and Mars. It also will have NASA money because it won&t
have to ship up as much water to the station by space shuttles or
cargo rockets. Besides, it&s important as the space station is
about to expand from three people living on board to six.
The recycling system had been brought up to the space station
last November by space shuttles Endeavour, but it couldn&t be used
until samples(样品) were tested back on earth. So when it came time
to actually drink up, NASA made a big deal of it. The three-man
crew stood holding their drinks and congratulated engineers in two
NASA centres that worked on the system.
&This is something that had been the stuff of science fiction,&
American astronaut Michael Barratt said before taking a small
mouthful. &The taste is worth trying.&
The new system takes the combined urine of the crew from the
toilet, moves it to a big tank, where the water is boiled off, and
the vapor(水蒸气) is collected. The rest of the urine is thrown away.
Then the water vapor is mixed with water from air, and then it goes
through filters (过滤器). When six crew members are aboard it can make
about six gallons from urine in about six hours.
&Some people may find the idea of drinking recycled urine
distasteful, but it is also done on earth, but with a lot longer
time between urine and the tap,& said Marybeth Edeen, the space
station&s national lab manager.
The technology NASA developed for this system has already been
used for quick water purification after the 2004 Asian tsunami.
41. According to the text, the recycling system is important
because ___________.
A. it makes traveling to the moon for the average person
B. with it NASA won&t need to ship any water up the space
C. it can help meet the need for more water after the crew is
D. it protects the environment in space by reducing the amount

When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor named Dr. Gibbs. He
didn&t look like any doctor I&d ever known. When Dr. Gibbs wasn&t
saving lives, he was planting trees.
The good doctor had some interesting theories concerning
planting trees. He believed in &No pains, no gains&.He never watered
his new trees, which was beyond many people.Once I asked why.He
answered that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you water
them, each following tree generation will grow weaker and weaker. So
you have to make things tough for them.He talked about how watering
trees made for shallow roots, and how trees that weren&t watered
had to grow deep roots in search of water.I took him to mean that
deep roots were to be treasured.
So he never watered his trees. He&d plant an oak(橡树) and,
instead of watering it every morning, he&d beat it with a rolled-up
newspaper. Smack! Slap! Pow! I asked him why he did that, and he
said it was to get the tree&s attention.
Dr. Gibbs passed away a couple of years after I left home. Every
now and again, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that
I&d watched him plant some twenty-five years ago. They&re extremely
tall, big and strong now. Those trees wake up in the morning and
beat their chests and drink their coffee black.

Little Dick lived in a town. When he was six, his father died in
an accident and his mother left him without saying goodbye. He had
to live with his grandpa. He sold newspapers in the market during
the day and taught himself English and maths at home at night.
There were a lot of children near the market. They often wanted to
play tricks on the quiet boy. They threw a gold coin and a silver
coin on the ground in front of him. They let him choose which one
he wanted to keep. The boy always seemed to prefer the silver one
to the gold one. They were all happy and often repeated the same
trick. They thought the boy was foolish.
There lived an old teacher by the market. Dick often went and
asked her a few questions. She was friendly to the poor boy and
always taught him carefully.
&Why do you always choose the silver coins but never touch the
gold ones?& the old woman asked one day. &Don&t you think gold
coins are much more valuable than silver ones?& &Yes, I do, madam,&
answered the boy. &But I&m afraid they won&t throw any coins to me
any longer if I choose a gold coin!&

The health of Chinese youngsters&a big concern
A latest survey shows that the health of Chinese youngsters
has greatly declined. Many Chinese students are facing a number
of physical problems, such as obesity, and short-sightedness, etc.
Under the current educational system, marks seem to mean everything
to students so students have to spend most of their time in doing
endless homework in order to pass the college entrance
examination. As a result, they do not sleep or exercise enough.
To improve students& health, we should reform the current
educational system.Besides, we call for less homework, thus leaving
students more time to sleep and take exercise and only in this way
can the health of youngsters be greatly improved.
The author had a neighbour called Dr. Gibbs who had his own way
of planting trees. Instead of taking too much care of his trees, he
let them survive and grow in the tough environment.
I can&t agree more with Dr. Gibbs& way of planting trees for the
reason that too much care would spoil the trees since they would
depend on Dr. Gibbs& care. Once they had lost the care, their
survival ability was lost, too.
Due to the birth control in our country, many parents have only
one child. So they do what they can to satisfy their children&s
needs and arrange everything for them, making them unable to look
after themselves without their parents& care. Flowers from a
greenhouse can never withstand a storm. As a famous saying goes,
&spare the rod and spoil the child.&
If I were a parent, I would make my child eat bitter food, do
hard work and send him or her to the places where he could get the
fullest training and knowledge with which he or she would value the
labour and be capable of facing hardships. I would also teach my
child to help support the family. More could be done apart from
food , hard work and bad condition.

1. B 数学焦虑和舞台怯场是相似的be similar to, different与from搭配,far
与from搭配,familiar与to或with搭配,但不符合题意。
(良知),和determination(决心)均不符合常理。
conclusion (得出结论),draw a comparison (把&加以比较), draw a line
如用worry,应用worry about math。
Why does it work?
18.about 考介词,&对&抱怨&用complain about。
19.to rebuild 考动词不定式作定语,修饰the chance。
25.them 考代词宾格,指代前面提到的all the people。
26. B。细节理解题。B。从第2句中的&&had died of a heart
从&Politkovskaya was a special reporter for the small
newspaper Novaya
根据第二段的&as they walked in the country&s traditional
33. A。 根据第三段的&won a great
victory&、& gaining the most votes&,可知A为正确答案。
36. A。 根据第一条建议中的&This can be the seed that leads to new
38. A。 Tips中提到&Take up a new
hobby&对结交新朋友有好处,并没有说参加训练班可以帮助&Take up a new hobby&,因此A为正确答案。
39. C。 根据倒数第二段的&Email your new friends with fun things to
根据第二段&It&s important as the space station is about
to expand from three people living on board to six&,再联系第五段的&When
six crew members are aboard it can make about six gallons from
urine in about six hours&,可知C为正确答案。
42. D。 根据最后一段&The technology & for quick water purification
after the 2004 Asian tsunami&,可知d是发生得最早的;根据第三段的&The recycling
system had been brought up to the space station last November , but
it couldn&t be used until samples &&,可知c在a前面,因此D为正确答案。
第六段提到&but with a lot longer time between urine and
the tap&,其中的between urine and the tap即将尿循环制成水的过程,由此可知D为正确答案。
