Academic and College Counseling
Fairmont Preparatory Academy’s Academic and College Counseling
Program is unique by design to provide each student the individualized
guidance he or she needs to succeed academically and find his or her
best college fit. Our College & Counseling Center was recently
built in 2012, and serves as a central hub for students and their
counselors. Students also have the opportunity to explore academic and
college related information.

ADVANCED SCIENCE & ENGINEERING PROGRAM
Counseling Support by Grade
Freshman Year
Students meet with their class-level or program-specific Academic Counselor
several times throughout the year for guidance in class choice and
scheduling. At the beginning of the year, the Academic Counselor helps
freshman students understand their academic path options and guides them in
identifying the best path based on interest and ability. From there, the
Academic Counselor works with each student to map out an individualized
Four Year Plan to help the student make the most of his or her four years
at Fairmont Prep.
Sophomore Year
Students continue to meet with the same class-level or program-specific
Academic Counselor throughout the year. The Academic Counselors help
students re-evaluate their Four Year Plans to assess progress and determine
if any changes need to be made based on new interests or discoveries.
Junior Year
Throughout the fall semester, students continue to meet with the same
class-level or program-specific Academic Counselor for guidance in
scheduling. At the start of the spring semester, the Academic Counselor
facilitates the transition of the student from the Academic Counseling
Department to the College Counseling Department. The Academic Counselor
often joins the students in their first meeting with their College
Counselor to explain the student’s Four Year Plan and ensure the transition
is smooth. From there, junior students begin meeting one-on-one with their
College Counselors to start deciding which colleges to apply to and
preparing for the fall application process.
Senior Year
Senior year is dedicated to working one-on-one with the College Counselors.
Students meet with their counselors as often as necessary to finalize their
college application list, work through the application process, discuss
acceptances, and ultimately make a final college decision. Our College
Counselors prioritize getting to know each student individually to help
guide them in their college decision process and to write personalized and
relevant recommendation letters.
Standardized Testing
Information
The SAT is a globally recognized college admission test that lets you
show colleges what you know and how well you can apply that knowledge.
It tests your knowledge of reading, writing and math — subjects that
are taught every day in high school classrooms. Most students take the
SAT during their junior or senior year of high school, and almost all
colleges and universities use the SAT to make admission decisions.
Taking the SAT is the first step in finding the right college for
you — the place where you can further develop your skills and pursue
your passions. But SAT scores are just one of many factors that
colleges consider when making their admission decisions. High school
grades are also very important. In fact, the combination of high school
grades and SAT scores is the best predictor of your academic success in

The ACT is a national college admissions examination that consists of
subject area tests in:
Mathematics
The ACT Plus Writing includes the four subject area tests plus a
30-minute Writing Test. ACT results are accepted by all four-year
colleges and universities in the U.S. The ACT includes 215
multiple-choice questions and takes approximately 3 hours and 30
minutes to complete, including a short break (or just over four hours
if you are taking the ACT Plus Writing). Actual testing time is 2 hours
and 55 minutes (plus 30 minutes if you are taking the ACT Plus
