指环王共分六篇，托尔金原想集结成一册出版，因二战纸张短缺分成三册出版（百度百科）
托尔金生前共出版10部小说，死后儿子继续编辑整理又出版了大约20部。在这些所有作品中只有7部有中文版。其中六本按故事发展顺序排列为 精灵的宝钻，胡林的女儿 ，霍比特人和指环王三部曲。（知乎整理）

book在英语里本来就有卷的意思，而实际上指环王确实是三本六卷。你也没错

我发现你这是wiki上面的啊，上面有这句话啊Structurally, the novel is divided internally into six books, two per volume, with several appendices of background material included at the end of the third volume.其实最关键得看页数啊，指环王页数是霍比特人将近六倍

这句话光看前半句不好翻译，不明白book和volume的递进关系，看最后一句就明白了。六本或者六章，每卷两章，附录和背景材料在第三卷的末尾。你觉得背景材料和附录什么的在最后一本末尾是非常合理的吧，。总结一下就是，一个故事，分了六篇，出版了三本书，叫三部曲并不准确，但并没有六部曲的说法。
再说了，两个故事页数的比较，能看出来在出版纸质书时本数的比较关系么。霍比特人本来就薄薄的一本。 况且你还是电子书。
看过原著的都知道，哈利波特的系列电影拍的是非常失败的，演员更换换，导演也换，风格每一部都不太一样。单纯从艺术角度考虑，哈利波特系列电影对原著的作用是减分的，而魔戒系列电影对原著是加分的（即使没有电影加分，魔戒原著已经很牛了.魔戒已经形成包括文字 文化 魔法等一套完整的世界观，甚至托尔金还专门创造了精灵语，非常完善的语言体系）论原著魔戒>哈利波特 论电影魔戒>哈利波特
