Amanda Laura Bynes (born April 3, 1986) is an
fashion designer and actress. After appearing in commercials and in plays, Bynes rose to prominence as a child star in the late 1990s and early 2000s on the
and . From 2002 to 2006, she starred in the sitcom
on . She has also starred in several films, including
(2007), and
(2010). After 2010 Bynes announced an acting hiatus.
Beginning in 2013, Bynes once again rose to public prominence for her legal and psychiatric troubles, which have been heavily covered by public media.
Bynes was born and raised in , the youngest of three children of Lynn ( Organ), a
and office manager, and Rick Bynes, a . Her father is , and is of , Lithuanian, and
descent. Her mother is
(from a family from , , and Poland). Bynes's maternal grandparents are

In 1993, Bynes attended a comedy camp, and began professionally acting at the age of 7, appearing in a television advertisement for
candies. During her childhood, she also appeared on stage in versions of , , , and . Bynes rose to prominence with her various roles in
for seasons three through six. She later became a regular member of 's
(1997–99). At the age of 13, she began starring in her own sketch comedy show,
(). In 2002, Amanda began to establish her fan base with her debut film role in
(2002) opposite , and a co-starring role in the WB sitcom What I Like About You (2002–06) with , which gained positive reviews. She also made her voice-over debut in
and later in the animated comedy Robots (2005).

Amanda's film career took off over the next two years, with a role in the romantic comedy
(2005) and a starring role in the comedy
(2006). She also appeared on the cover of ?? '?s July 2003 edition. Bynes was named one of ? 's "25 Hottest Stars Under 25" in 2006. Later that year, she starred in , a comedy based on 's . Bynes appeared in another romantic comedy, , which was shot before She's the Man but released after it, showing in cinemas outside of the United States in 2005 and 2006 and debuting in the U.S. on the
network on January 21, 2007.
Bynes' next role was Penny Pingleton in . The film was a critical and commercial success. Hairspray went on to become Amanda's most successful film at the time. Bynes was featured on the , which went on to get a . Bynes' next role was in another comedy, , released on September 21, 2007. In August 2007, Bynes teamed up with
to create her own fashion line called Dear, consisting of apparel and accessories. The line was cut short when Steve & Barry's filed
in 2008 and went out of business in January 2009. In 2008, Bynes appeared in the
as the student assistant of 's character. Bynes was also originally set to star as Ryden Malby in the 2009 comedy , but was replaced by .[]
In June 2009, Bynes signed a two picture deal with Screen Gems. The first of the two movies was the 2010 teen comedy , starring
and . The film was once again another critical and commercial success with many critics praising Bynes role. The film after
would have been a starring role. Bynes also planned to reprise her role as Penny Pingleton in the sequel to Hairspray. However,
was canceled. Bynes was also originally set to star in the comedy
but dropped out and was replaced by .
Bynes appeared on the cover of the February 2010 issue of
magazine, highlighting her photo spread inside. She stated, "I think every shot ... was sexy" and that the new look is "who I am." That June, Bynes stated that she planned to retire from acting, announcing on her
page, "I don't love acting anymore, so I've stopped doing it." A month later, Bynes had an apparent change of heart and "unretired". At the , Bynes told
that she's merely taking "time off." In September 2012, Bynes said that she has once again retired from acting and would instead focus on launching her career as a fashion designer and a rapper. In December 2013, Bynes enrolled at the
for 2014. She was expelled from the school in 2014.
In 2007, Bynes described herself as Jewish, and also stated: "As far as religion, I was raised both. I learned about both
and . My parents said it was up to me to decide [which faith to adhere to] when I grew up. I'm sort of a spiritual person anyway. I haven't decided yet on a religion. I don't know yet exactly what I believe."
Bynes is interested in illustration and fashion design. Bynes has previously had her own fashion line sold nationwide and moved from Los Angeles to New York in order to facilitate her fashion career.

In March 2012, Bynes was stopped and
by police for talking on a cell phone while driving. A month later, she was arrested and charged with
(DUI) after side-swiping a police car in . On September 4, 2012, Bynes was charged for two alleged
incidents, one occurring in April and the other in August. The hit and run charges were dismissed in December 2012 following a financial settlement between Bynes and the victims. On February 24, 2014, the DUI charge was dropped and Bynes was sentenced to three years of probation for
as part of a .
Bynes' driver's license was suspended some time before September 6, 2012, by the California . On September 16, Bynes was cited for driving with a suspended license, and her car was impounded. In May 2013, Bynes pleaded
to the charge, and was sentenced to three years' probation. Her license was restored in April 2014.
On May 23, 2013, Bynes was arrested at her home in
for , attempted , and . According to a prosecutor at Bynes' arraignment, police observed Bynes throwing a
from the window of her 36th floor apartment. Bynes claimed that the alleged bong was actually a . Following her arrest, Bynes underwent a psychiatric evaluation at a hospital before she was processed at the police station. The case against Bynes was dismissed in June 2014.
On July 22, 2013,
sheriff's deputies detained Bynes in front of a stranger's house in , where she had allegedly started a small fire in the driveway, and had her hospitalized under a 72-hour . Bynes' parents filed for
of their daughter shortly after her hospitalization began. On August 9, Bynes' mother was granted a temporary conservatorship over Bynes' affairs, including her medical care, as well as control over her finances, after the judge agreed that Bynes had a "lack of capacity to give informed consent to medical care." On September 30, Bynes was transferred from
to receive "specialized treatment in a private facility outside of Los Angeles."
In December 2013, Bynes was released from treatment to her parents. Bynes was arrested on September 28, 2014, for her second DUI.
On October 10, 2014, Bynes was hospitalized in , and placed on a temporary psychiatric hold after she made accusations via
that her father sexually a shortly after she tweeted that her father had not molested her, but she claimed he implanted a microchip in her brain that forced her to make the accusation. Her psychiatric hold was later extended. On October 22, Bynes' mother received conservatorship of her on October 30, Bynes left the psychiatric facility early.
