I only find it ridiculous because it's specifically chosen for the basketball stars. I find it dumb anywhere in the world when parents name their kids after sports or movie stars.
It's one thing if you like the name... But when it's just because of the celebrity, it's lame.

15 years ago when I was a 4th grader, my English teacher gave the whole class a list of common English names to let everyone chose from. They are pretty normal names like Ann, Lily, Peter etc. and I went with Helen for two years but never liked that name. Then most of us felt it's really mediocre and wanted to change it to something &unique&. Some student chose something that can resemble or sound like their Chinese names. One kid chose Mosquito only because his Chinese name is 文 which sounds the same as 蚊(mosquito). In Chinese, almost any character can be taken as a first name. Of course there are popular ones, but sometimes people think it's cooller to have really strange words in one's name. However, in English, last names are more variable than first names. I met at least 5 Sarah already and I don't ever want to name my kids a &common& English name. P.S. One reason Lily is popular is because it's a character in official English textbook for elementary students.

English names are pretty set, there's only a collection of a thousand or so of them. A lot of them are from the Bible or have meanings in other languages - lots of English names are spread out in different forms all over Europe, and they have a meaning in one of those languages!
Names like 'Mosquito' I think are pretty cool. But they're nicknames, not names.
Lily's actually an old name, it's coming back into fashion after a good period out of fashion (English names come in and out of fashion).
If you're going to live in China, you can call your kid whatever you want because nobody's going to care. But if you're going to live in the West it's better to call your kid something normal. Children get teased and bullied because of their names in English-speaking countries.

Mermaid is classic. She sounds &smrt&. i met a sales chick on Alibaba named Funky Wang. i actually chose her company as one we would meet in person bc of her name and she turned out to be quite nice, albeit 25 with the maturity level of a 15 yr old. I also know a Vanilla, February, and a Strawberry. Cherry, Karen, Angel and Candy seem to be most popular english names now. In HK it bugged meet to meet so many girls named Winnie. Don't know why that was so popular down there. My old travel agent in HK was named Venus Poon, still love that name. Best guys name here that i've met was Danger.
