Balancing work and life outside work seems to be a major challenge these days. There is so much talk of stress in the media, you would think it was the number one problem we face. Of course you only have to think about global warming what an exaggeration this is.
Nevertheless, stress is a major issue for thousands, perhaps millions of people. For me the question boils down to position of work in our family and social lives. Do we work to live or live to work? I believe that we have to do the former. What happens outside work is obviously more important and we should be working with this in mind. Now what about someone who believes work is more important than anything? Well, that’s the kind of person who is prone to stress, and who needs to consider carefully their attitude towards their work. In some cases of course, companies are responsible as they demand employees work increasingly long hours. It would be a good idea if the government were to implement measures to protect employees from these kind of companies. But at the same time it’s not always the companies that are responsible. Sometimes individuals put themselves under pressure and these are kind of people who need help. Professional stress counselors are trained to advise them, but they are more likely to be able to solve the problem by talking to a close friend. That’s my view. Most other doctors wouldn’t agree with me, but the issue is quite simple really. As a famous person once said, ‘ Nobody ever lay on their death bed saying, “ I wish I’d spent more time in the office”. Thus the solution to most work-related stress is perhaps to realize and accept that is not and should not become the most important thing in our lives.a.Who, according to this doctor, constantly talks about stress? _ _____________________________b.According to this doctor, is stress the number one problem in our lives today? ______________________________________________________c.Who suffers most from stress, someone who works to live or someone who lives to work? ________________________________________________d.Who is responsible for this problem, companies, individuals or both? _____________________________________________________e.Who should protect individuals from companies who don’t care about them? ________________________________________________________f.Which kind of people need help with this problem? __________________________________________________________g.Does this doctor believe that those needing help should turn to stress-counselors? ___________________________________________________________h.Who does he think can offer the best support? ___________________________________________i.Are his views different from those of most of his colleagues? ________________________________________________What simple fact does the doctor believe we must accept? __________这是学校出的题,明天要考

A proud father has named his son after a computer software term.
Jon Blake Cusack, from Mocjogam,, told the local newspapers the US traditional way of adding “Junior” or “II” after a boy’s name was too common.
So, when his son was born last week, he decided on the name Jon Blake Cusack 2.0, as if he were a software upgrade.
Mr. Cusack admitted that it took months to persuade his wife, Jamie, to accept the idea.
Mrs. Cusack said she asked several friends whether they can accept this name or not.
All the men, she said, felt the name was “cool”. However, her women friends did not think so. “I think the women end up like it,” she said.
Mr. Cusack told the local newspaper he got the idea from a film called “The Legend of 1900”, in which an abandoned baby is given the name 1900 to remember the year of its birth.
“I thought that if they can do it, why can’t we? he said.
After little Jon version 2.0 was born, Mr. Cusack even sent a celebratory e-mail to the family and friends designed to look as though he and his wife had created a new software.
“I wrote things like there are a lot of new features from Version 1.0 with additional features from Jamie,” he said. And he is already planning for his son’s future,” If he has a child, he could name it 3.0,” he said.56.From the passage we know that “Jon Blake Cusack 2.0” __________.
C.has the same meaning as “Jon Blake Cusack Junior”
57.What do the names of “1900” and “Jon Version 2.0” have in common?
B.They are both untraditional. 58.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Mrs. Cusack didn’t agree to name her son after a computer software term at the very beginning.
59.What does Mr. Cusack’s “Version 1.0” refer to in the last paragraph?
B.Mr. Cusack. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Plastic race tracks, which have become popular at schools around the city, are raising controversy as to whether they can harm students’ health.
The tracks, made of soil and cement (胶接剂) covered with a plastic layer surface, are said to give off poisonous gases when exposed to hot weather and strong light. Such gases are known to cause dizziness and sickness.“People breathe in up to 30 times as much air as the average level when they do exercises, so the plastic tracks can be particularly dangerous,” said Wu Meiyan, a chemist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. We advised that schools stop using the tracks at their earliest convenience.
A testing laboratory at East China University of Science and Technology, which conducts frequent experiments on synthetic (合成) surfaces, said poisonous parts found in the plastic used for tracks have already experienced chemical changes before installation (安装) on campus playgrounds. Experts also point out that exposure to rain cleans plastic materials and cause the strength of harmful elements to become smaller. In spite of this, local schools, for the most part, remain enthusiastic (interested). According to the Shanghai Education Commission, some 80 percent said they have no plans to give up synthetic facilities.
“We won’t give up the tracks,” said Zhou Zhigang, vice principal at Jing’an Foreign Language School, whose school plans to use new tracks this year.
“Plastic surface tracks can greatly secure (make sure of) students’ safety, as well as improve the campus environment,” said a commission official named Zhao.
Until recently, school tracks were covered with charcoal cinder (煤渣), which resulted in a great number of athletic injuries because of their course surfaces, said Zhao.
“Students’ wounds often become inflamed (发炎) when coal cinders get into their skin,” said Yang Jun, a local sports lover. “Plastic tracks make much more sense.”66. The passage tells us plastic race tracks
A. may do great harm to students’ health
B. are popular with students
C. cost less than those made of soil and cement
D. can kill people if exposed to hot weather67. What Wu Meiyan cares about is
A. the quality of plastic race tracks
B. that too much exercise is harmful to students
C. the effect of plastic race tracks on students' health
D. how to reduce the amount of gases that give out from plastic race tracks68. The author took a testing laboratory at East China University of Science and Technology as an
example to show
A. it is an authority (权威) in scientific research
B. plastic race tracks are harmful indeed
C. why schools are fond of installing plastic race tracks
D. not everyone agrees that plastic race tracks are harmful to health69. Judging from the passage, we know
A. Zhou Zhigang is very easygoing
B. plastic race tracks have some advantages
C. the wide use of plastic race tracks can lead to no injuries on campus
D. Yang Jun is against the use of plastic race tracks70. The underlined word “controversy” in the passage means
A. quarrel
B. convenience
C. trouble
D. fierce argument

&Why don’t birds get lost on their long
flights from one place to another? Scientists have puzzled over this question
for many years. Now they’re beginning to fill in the blanks.
&&& Not long ago, experiments showed that
birds rely on the sun to guide them during daylight hours. But what about birds
that fly by night? Tests with artificial stars have proved that certain night-flying
birds are able to follow the stars in their long-distance flights.
&&& A dove had spent its lifetime in a
cage and had never flown under a natural sky. Yet it showed an inborn ability
to use the stars for guidance. The bird’s cage was placed under an artificial
star-filled sky. The bird tried to fly in the same direction as that taken by
his outdoor cousins. Any change in the position of the artificial stars caused
a change in the direction of his flight.
&&& But the stars are apparently their
principal means of navigation. When the stars are hidden by clouds, they
apparently find their way by such landmarks as mountain ranges, coast lines,
and river courses. But when it’s too dark to see these, the doves circle
helplessly, unable to find their way.
11. The reason why birds don’t get lost on long flights
A) have been known to scientists for years
B) have only recently been discovered
C) are known by everyone
D) will probably remain a mystery
12. During daylight hours, birds _______.
A) fly aimlessly
B) rely on landmarks
C) use sun for guidance
D) are more likely to get lost
13. By “his outdoor cousins” the author means _________.
A) other experimenters
B) the other doves of the same brood
C) doves under the natural sky
D) other birds in general
14. The experiment with the dove indicated that
_________.
A) birds have to be taught to navigate
B) a bird that has been caged will not fly long distances
C) some birds cannot fly at night
D) some birds seem to follow the stars when they fly at
15. In total darkness, doves _______.
A) use landmarks
B) don’t know which way to fly
C) fly back home
D) wait for the stars to appear

答案是:B C C C B
11.D 12.C 13.C 14.D 15. B
Now they’re beginning to fill in the blanks. Not long ago, experiments showed thatbirds rely on the sun to guide them during daylight hours. Any change in the position of the artificial stars causeda change in the direction of his flight. But when it’s too dark to see these, the doves circlehelplessly, unable to find their way.
