Special Report:
CCTV caught up with one of Nelson Mandela’s long-time friends, Ahmad Kathrada. Here is what he had to say about the loss of the global icon.
"That was very emotional, very, very traumatic, uh, I know him for 67 years, I was at a boy at school, he was at university, 11 years my senior - and I knew him all my life as a very strong man, he was a boxer, well built, tall, when I saw him in hospital it was just a shadow of himself...and I felt it very much emotionally. To just see this man who I knew and now he’s lost so much weight and is very, very ill and it was a very, very difficult moment for me just to see that after so many years. You know and that emotion remained, but what also I at that moment I found you know the doctors they say he is very, very ill, they didn’t say of course that he is going to die but they did say he is very ill, and I knew that I didn’t have to have a doctor to tell me that he’s not going to be with us for very long considering how sick he was. So in my mind I knew it was going to happen and I was prepared psychologically for the moment and it happened. The emotion is still there but not as strong as it was when I saw him in the condition in which he was because at that time I accepted the fact that he’s not going to be with us for too long." said Ahmad Kathrada, Nelson Mandela’s Friend.

If you were in a country where the weather doesn't change much, it would be difficult to say much about it. But you asked why we talked about weather to strangers. That's an interesting question. It's possible the weather is a subject quite safe to talk about.
  W: It's a way of reaching agreement.
M: Yes. I begin by saying, "A cold morning, isn’t it?" The other man says, "It certainly is." I say, "It's been cold all week." And the other man says, "Yes, we're having a very cold spring."
W: So far you've agreed about everything.

In order to know a foreign language thoroughly, four things are neces sary. First, we must understand the language when hearing it spoken. Rats eat our food or make it so dirty that it isn't fit for people at all. That's why people often kill them by laying down poison. After a day or two, they find the poison still there. The rats haven't touched it, even though it is near the food which they eat. People think they must be clever and cunning. Some scientists have been trying to find the best way to poison rats. They have watched to see just what a rat does day and night. They have found out that rats aren't so clever. They are just very shy.
Rats usually live in holes. They run from these holes to the places where they eat and drink. They have special paths on which they travel each time. So they know their paths quite well.
If anything new, such as stone or wood, is put in the path, the rats won't go near it at first as they are too frightened. It will take them many days to get over the fear. They are also frightened to go near a place that they know, where something has been taken away. If a path goes around a rock, the rats follow the same path around the rock each time. If the rock is taken away, they will still run round the place where the rock was! They won't cross the empty place, which is now open to them, even though it would be quicker.
Rats will always keep away from anything unusual to them. That's why they won't eat poison on the first or second night. They usually won't go anywhere near it for about four days until they get used to being there. Even then they only eat a little at a time.
If people want to kill rats with poison, all they have to do is to leave it out for a few days. Once the rats have got used to it, they will eat it and die.

Today, when a man steps on to the moon, or something new and important happens, the world learns about it immediately. What did the newspapers say about that first flight in 1903? Strangely enough, they said hardly anything about it at all. There were only a few reports about it in the papers. These reports said very little. Some of the things they said were not even correct.
In 1904 the Wrights built a second machine. They called it "Flyer No. Two". They invited some reporters to a field near Dayton to watch them fly. Unfortunately there was some mechanical (机械的)trouble with the plane and it did not fly at all that day. The newspapermen went away. They were disappointed and did not come back. The Wrights went on with their work. In 1905, they built an even better machine, "Flyer No. Three". They were able to stay upon the air for half an hour and more in the machine and they were able to turn and climb in the air. Farmers and travelers on the road around Dayton often saw them flying. But when these people told newspapermen about it, they refused to believe them.
The Wrights offered "Flyer No. Three" to the United States govern ment. The government was not interested. They seemed to think the Wrights wanted money in order to build a plane. They did not understand the Wrights had already done this, and flown it as well. Experts were still saying that mechanical flight was impossible. At the end of 1905, the two brothers took their plane to pieces. The parts were put into a huge wooden box. It seemed nobody was interested.

There is a story of a country where the rate of inflation(通货膨胀率)is so high that clever people pay for a taxi ride before the trip instead of after. This story may or may not be true. But inflation was almost that serious in Germany from July 1920 until December 1923. Prices went up so fast that by the end of 1923 they were 50 billion percent higher-a rise of almost 25000 / 40 a month.
There was so much paper money, and it had so little value, that people carried bags full of money around to pay for things. One woman told the story of standing outside a shop with a basket full of 500 000 mark notes(马克). She wanted to buy just one piece of meat, and she hoped she had enough money. But when she was looking, a thief robbed(抢夺) her. He didn't take her money, though, he threw it away and took the basket in stead.
At first workers demanded to be paid every day. But as the situation be came worse, they had to be paid twice a day. But they had to run out and spend the money at once, or it would lose its value. People bought anything that was for sale, but food was almost impossible to find. Farm workers re fused to take money. They wanted to be paid in potatoes instead.
New policies(政策)ended the inflation in 1923, when the government introduced a new money. But about half of the German people lost every thing in those three and a half years.

Professor Martin's report says that children who attend a number of different schools, because their parents have to move around the country, probably make slow progress in their studies. There are also signs, says Professor Martin, that an unusually large number of such children are mentally affected.
The professor says, "It's true, my personal feeling is that children should stay in one school. However, our findings are based on research and not on any personal feelings that I or my assistants may have on the subject."
Captain Thomas James, an Army lecturer for the past 20 years and him self a father of two, said," I've never heard such rubbish. Taking me for ex ample, no harm is done to the education of my children who change schools regularly-if they keep to the same system, as in our army schools. In my experience, I've known quite a few of them-Army children are as well-adjusted(调整)as any others, if not more so. What the professor doesn't appear to appreciate is the fact that in such situations children will adapt(适应)much better than grown-ups."
When this was put to Professor Martin, he said that at no time had his team suggested that all such children were backward or mentally affected in some way, but simply that in their experience there was a clear tendency(倾向).
"Our findings show that while the very bright child can deal with regular changes without harming his or her general progress in studies, the majority of children suffer from constantly having to enter a new learning situation."

    A. is the opposite of what his report has shown
    B. is in a way supported by his research
    C. has played a big part in his research

  My dear classmates,
May I have your attention, please?
  Thanks for your listening.
  参考答案:
  My dear classmates,
May I have your attention, please?
Yesterday I paid a visit to a model high school, together with my friend. It's very big with a beautiful fountain in the center of the schoolyard.
We started our visit from the main building. First we went to the lab building where some students were doing experiments. Then we entered the lecture hall behind the lab building and saw many students listening to a lecture given by a professor. Opposite to the lecture hall was the art center. There we watched groups of students playing musical instruments. Finally we arrived at the playground at the far back of the school. Some boys were having a football game, which was so exciting that we couldn't help cheering for them.
It was really an impressive visit.
  Thanks for your listening.
