真菌是由原生物进化而来，它不是植物，没有叶绿素，不进行光合作用；也不是动物，不进食，也不动。但它的膳食纤维比植物多，蛋白质比动物高。
它无叶无芽无花，自身结果；可食可补可药，周身是宝。它的品种很多，常见的真菌有灵芝、冬虫夏草、黑木耳、香菇、银耳、猴头菇、金针菇、羊肚菌、鸡苁菌、松口蘑、密环菌、猪苓、茶树菇、鸡腿菇、茯苓等。
真菌的主要成份有真菌多糖、三萜类、甾醇类、腺苷、氨基酸、蛋白质、多肽、甘露醇以及大量的微量元素等。
真菌多糖有修复细胞、提高免疫功能，是真正意义上的免疫修复性营养成份。三萜类有安神、解痉、降血压的作用。甾醇类化合物有提高机体生命力，提高内分泌水平的作用。腺苷类有降血脂、降血脂、降血粘、改善血液微循环的作用。
