超音速客机（Supersonic Transport, SST）是指其速度比音速快的民航客机，目前（2015年）并没有商用的超音速客机提供服务，而曾经用作正式运营的超音速客机仅有协和飞机。除此之外，另一款量产的超音速客机只有的客机。而则于日进行最后一次的商业飞行之后，全面退役。外文名Supersonic Transport, SST含&&&&义其速度比音速快的民航客机研制时间20世纪50年代末研制背景成熟，追求飞行速度
20世纪50年代末自从进入时代，、、“快帆”等喷气式客机趋于成熟后，国际民航界就不断追求飞行速度的提升，对超音速运输机市场前景也十分乐观，飞机制造公司和又把注意力放到超音速客机身上。如果民航客机能够实现超音速飞行，将使飞机速度提高两倍以上，大大缩短长途飞行的时间。
20世纪60年代初，英国/法国两国开始联合研制，也开始研制和洛克希德L2000超音速客机(未投产)。但是超音速客机的命运并不像亚音速客机那样一帆风顺。经过了近二十年的努力，只有两种超音速客机在航线上使用。这就是英法联合研制的和的图-144。协和式飞机（Concorde）是由和联合研制的一种四发超音速客机。协和式超音速客机采用无水平尾翼布局，为了适应超音速飞行，协和式飞机的机翼采用，机翼前缘为S形。三角翼的特点为失速临界点高，飞行速度可以更快，且能有效降低超高速抖动时的问题。协和式飞机前机身细长，这样既可以获得较高的低速仰角升力，有利于起降，又可以降低超音速飞行时产生的阻力，有利于超音速飞行。协和式飞机由于机头过于细长，飞行员在起降时由于高仰角导致视线会被机头挡住，为了改善起降视野，机头设计成可下垂式。协和式飞机共有四台。最大飞行速度可达2.04。最大载重航程5000公里。协和式飞机客座数100-140。
1969年，第一架协和超音速客机诞生，并于日投入商业飞行。协和式超音速客机是世界上率先投入航线上运营的超音速商用客机。协和式飞机一共只生产了20架。由于经济性差，载客量偏小，运营成本较高以及噪音问题，最终也只有和使用协和式飞机投入航线运营。英国航空公司和法国航空公司使用协和式飞机运营跨越的航线。日，法国航空公司的一架协和式飞机在巴黎起飞后两分钟起火坠毁，机上100名乘客，9名机组成员全部遇难，地面另有4名受害者。到2003年，尚有12架协和式飞机进行商业飞行。日，协和式飞机执行了最后一次飞行，全部退役。前的超音速客机研制晚于协和式飞机，但首次试飞却早于协和式。1960年代初，当前苏联得悉美国、西欧准备研制超音速客机后，仓促上马研制超音速客机。由研制的图-144在外形上与协和式飞机非常相近，特别是当前苏联驻英使馆人员曾因窃取协和资料被大批驱逐的消息披露后，因此航空界普遍怀疑图-144是抄袭协和式飞机的，并戏称其为“协和斯基”。 图-144与协和式飞机一样采用下单翼结构，双三角翼型，无平尾，可下垂的机头。四台发动机也分别下挂在机翼下侧。图-144的巡航速度为2.35马赫，最大航程6500千米，载客140人。这些指标优于英法联合研制的协和式飞机。图-144的设计方案于1965年9月在前苏联公开展出。日，第一架原型机制成并进行了试飞，创下了一项世界纪录。经过大约3年的试飞，图-144进行了重大的改动，并于1973年投入批生产。估计图-144及其改进型共生产了16架。 日，图-144在参加国际航空展览时，突然坠毁，机上人员全部遇难。根据当时的报道，参展的图-144已经试飞过100余次，飞行时间约300小时。在此次航展上，该机共进行了两次飞行表演，且都是在协和式飞机表演之后进行的。6月3日的则是为35万观众进行的公开表演。在表演中，图-144曾三次穿场而过，在最后一次穿场飞行时，按计划应表演低空、低速飞行，飞行高度在100米左右。此时飞机放下了起落架，垂下机头整流罩，并放下前置操纵面，像一只大鸟掠过机场，然后开始爬升。当飞机爬升到1500米时，突然机头低下来，机腹左侧出现闪光。当飞机的俯冲角拉平到45°角时，左翼断裂。飞机翻了个身，随后整个飞机在空中肢解开来。飞机主体坠落在距机场几千米外的村庄里，砸死了几个人，毁坏了15家农宅，6名机上人员全部死亡。 图-144的坠毁是超音速客机第一次发生的重大事故。这一事件使前苏联推迟了该机交付民航使用的时间表。直到1976年12月，图-144才开始在国内航线上使用，主要是用来进行货运和邮运。1977年11月，图-144在莫斯科到的航线上定期运载旅客。大约在百余次飞行之后，又因发生事故而暂停了飞行。1979年前苏联生产出图-144的改进型图-144D，采用新型。它在经济性、噪音等方面都有很大改进，在1981年投入航线使用。但后来因苏联民航当局认为运行收益不大，没有继续发展使用。
1990年，（NASA）有意投入高速研究计划（High Speed Research，HSR），作为发展超音速（Supersonic Transport，SST）的基础。、NASA、麦道与波音等等几大机构合作使图-144重生，发展出图-144LL，作为HSR计划的研究用机。图-144LL的机体和量产型图-144大致相同，但使用超音速战略轰炸机的NK-321发动机。1999年，因成本及问题，NASA终止HSR计划。2005年6月，日本和法国就共同开发新一代超音速客机达成协议。这次试验是日本继2002年试验失败后的再次尝试。这次飞行试验将使用日本产无人机，机体长11.5米，宽4.7米，重2吨。试验人员准备将其以长约10米的火箭发射到1.8万米的高空，使其速度达到音速2倍。日法共同开发的新一代超音速客机一旦研制成功，其续航距离和载客数量都将是英法共同开发的的数倍，噪音和也将被大大缩减。于日在实验场进行超音速飞行试验。（Boeing 2707）是首次开发的超音速客机计划。波音2707在获得政府合约的情况下，波音公司在开始飞机的设计工作。但因成本提高，且缺乏明确的市场需求，在1971年2架原型建造之前就中止整个计划。[1]音速巡航者音速巡航者（Sonic Cruiser）是公司的一款概念音速客机，于首度提出，其设计速度比现有不少民航客机快，接近音速的水平。 2002年波音放弃&音速巡航者&，但技术以及机体设计应用于&7E7&计划（）。据台湾“联合新闻网”24日报道，美国私人企业XCOR航天公司公布了超音速飞机“山猫”号(Lynx)的造型图，再度炒热私人。“山猫”最快将于2014年前往太空，45分钟来回，每张票大约9.5万美元。
XCOR发言人布莱恩在接受美国媒体访问时表示，以“山猫”号为原型发展出来的超音速客机只需90分钟就能将旅客从纽约送到东京。
据悉，这种超音速飞机会在一般飞机的跑道上起降，但航程中将飞出大气层，高度在地表上空62英里(约100公里)。
XCOR营运长纳尔逊表示，这种从纽约到东京间需时90分钟的商用客机，首批将于20年内进入市场。
价值1000万美元的“山猫”号计划是XCOR于2008年宣布开发的，当时维珍银河公司的布朗森和太空探索科技公司的马斯克等太空企业家都在制造类似的火箭飞机。太空探索科技公司5月首度完成了飞往国际太空站的私人任务。
布朗森7月表示，维珍银河公司的太空飞机将于2013年年底推出私人太空旅行行程。据称已有约529人报名这项两小时、花费20万美元的太空旅行。
