“Children,tomorrow I
shall expect all of you to write compositions,” said a teacher of Love Lane
School. “Then, on Friday those who have done the best may stand up and read
their compositions to school.” Some of the children were pleased, and some were
not. “What shall we write about?” they asked.
Some of them thought that “Home” was a
good subject. Others liked “School”. One little boy chose “The Horse”. A little
girl said she would write about “Summer”. The next day, every pupil except
Henry had written a composition.
“Well, then,” said the teacher, “you may
take your notebook and go out behind the schoolhouse for half an hour. Think of
something to write about, and write the word on your notebook. Then try to tell
what it is, what it is like, what it is good for, and what is done with it.
That is the way to write a composition.”
Henry took his notebook and went out.
Just behind the schoolhouse was Mr. Finney’s barn. Quite close to the barn was
a garden. And in the garden, Henry saw a turnip (大头菜).
“Well, I know what that is,” and he wrote the word turnip on his notebook. Then he tried to tell
what it was like, what it was good for, and what was done with it.
Within half an hour, he had written a
very neat composition on his notebook. He then went into the house, and waited
while the teacher read it.
The teacher was surprised and pleased. He
said, “Henry, you have done very well. Today you may stand up before the school
and read what you have written about the turnip.”
Many years after that, some funny little
verses about Mr. Finney’s turnip were printed in a newspaper. Some people said
that they were what Henry wrote on his notebook that day at school.
Some students were not pleased probably because ____________.
A. the teacher would not read their
composition
B. they did worse than other students at

the composition

themselves at all

Instagram is containing so many photos of food—now a
pop-up diner in London is taking advantage of this new trend by letting people
settle the bill for their meals simply by uploading photos of their dishes to
social networks.
I always thought people's taking pictures of their
food was kind of silly, but at this new pop-up restaurant in the UK, I'd
probably do it too.'The Picture House' is the world's first
pay-by-photo restaurant—you order, click a photo of the food, share on
Instagram and eat for free!
The restaurant belongs to frozen food giant (巨人) Birds Eye, who came up with the idea to cash in on
people's addiction with photographing food and sharing the pictures online. They conducted a survey and found out that more than
half of the British population regularly took&&& pictures of
their meals. So they realized it was a better way to
advertise their new dining range.
The pop-up diner was open in Soho, London for three
days in May, and is now moving to other major UK cities. They serve two-course meals that customers don't have
to pay for, if they photo and Instagram it.
The restaurant is a part of Birds Eye's 'Food for
Life' campaign, a new marketing project that aims at changing the way people
look at frozen food.&Taking photos of food enables people
to show off and to share their mealtime moments—from the everyday to the
special,& said marketing director Margaret Jobling.
The reaction to The Picture House has been great so
far.And the pay-by-picture concept has proven
to be an effective way.Alternative payment methods are actually
gaining popularity among a lot of businesses.Last

by what they eat.

Some of the most painful moments I spend as a vet (兽医 ) are those spent with my customers
assisting my animal patients from this world to the next.Making this final decision is not easy, and I have
often felt powerless to comfort the sorrowful owners.
That was before I met Shane.
I had been called to examine a ten-year-old dog named
Belker who had developed a serious health problem. The
dog's owner—Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane—were hoping for a
miracle (奇迹).But I told the family there were no
miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia (安乐死) for the old dog in their home.As we made the arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they
thought it would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe the euthanasia. They felt Shane could learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my
throat as Belker's family surrounded him.
Shane seemed so calm, patting the old dog for the last
time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.
A few minutes later, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's death without
any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a
little while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that
animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up:
&I know why.&
Shocked, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next astonished me.I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.
He said, &Everybody is born so they can learn how
to live a good life: like loving everybody and being nice, right?& The
four-year-old continued, &Well, animals already know how to do that, so
they don't have to stay as long.&

something from it

he tried to comfort Belker's family
B.the vet was familiar with
the feelings of Belker's family

While I was in my 4th month of pregnancy(妊娠期)with my second child,we were
preparing for a trip to Louisiana, where
Marshall’s family live,to celebrate Jane’s 2nd birthday. Two days before we were to leave,we got the shocking news that I was going to lose the
baby. Not knowing when this would happen,we decided to continue with our trip.
Since Marshall’s family lives on a 600-acre
cattle farm, you often find that you have a lot of time
to yourself to think when you are there. That is
precisely what I did not want to do at this time.I told
Marshall that I needed to get a good book to get lost in while I was there.I told him I heard the Harry Potter
books were good,so he went out and got the first one for me.
During that trip,I totally got lost in the book, which was of great help during a time when I needed a
distraction to forget about the sadness. In the book,I noticed the name “Seamus”.I vaguely remembered it was pronounced “Shamus” and I
liked the sound of that.I mentioned it to Marshall and he liked it
too.Toward the end of the trip,I had just 5 chapters left and I knew I was about to
finish the first book, which I was pretty excited about.
Soon after we put Jane down to bed,I had started labor(分娩),so I
was unable to read. The labor lasted 5 and 1/2 hours, but Marshall stayed there with me,sitting beside me and reading aloud the last 5
chapters of Harry Potter.I can never
fully explain how much that helped me through the experience. And ever since then,Marshall
and I both have been fans of the Harry Potter books. We remember how they helped us get through that time
of our lives.
We were sad to have lost the baby, but the name Seamus started our journey toward
adoption. And we gave this name to our adopted son.Though our Seamus doesn’t have a drop of Irish blood
in him,the name fits him perfectly.
28.Why did the writer want a good
book during the trip?
A.Because the
trip to Louisiana would take a long time.
B.Because she
didn’t want to think of losing her baby.
C.Because she
had nothing else to do except reading.

It was about 11:15 pm on the passenger ship California. The night
was freezing cold and the water was filled with ice from the North Pole, making
it difficult for the ship to sail on.
the radio room, ship California’s operator Cyril Evans listened to the
radio-talk between a nearby passenger ship and the telegraph station on the
Canadian island of Newfoundland. Evans interrupted it and said, “We’re stopped
and surrounded by ice. Be careful as you pass through these waters.” The radio
operator on the nearby ship replied, “I’m too busy to talk now. I have many
messages to send to the telegraph station. ” Twenty minutes later, as he turned
off his radio and went to bed, Evans could still hear the ship sending its
passengers’ telegrams.
in the evening the California’s captain, Stanley Lord, had seen another ship
approaching. It looked about the size of his own, but attempts to contact the
ship failed. It lay dark and mysterious about 10 miles away. At 00:40 am there
appeared a sudden flash of light just over the mystery ship. Captain Lord,
thinking the ship might need help, ordered his officers to signal the ship by
lamp. There was no reply. Three more rockets then exploded, none appeared to go
higher than halfway up the mast(桅杆)of the mystery ship. Then at about 2:00 am it turned and slipped
into the darkness.
the light of the dawn there was no mystery ship, but 20 miles away was the
scene of a great disaster. Unfortunately, the mystery ship had stopped directly
in front of the California, preventing people on board from seeing clearly. If
this ship had not been there, Captain Lord would have recognized that the
rockets were SOS rockets that came not from the mystery ship but from a more
distant ship which the California could not see. If Cyril Evans had kept his

working with troubled teens,I used to have them do the Ten Years in the Future exercise. I asked
them to write a letter to a friend as if it was ten years in the future. Most
of these boys and girls didn’t think about the next week, much less ten years to come.
Like the Cheshire Cat says in Alice in Wonderland, “If you don’t know
where you want to go,then it doesn’t really matter what road you take!” We had some great
conversations as they really thought about what they wanted. For most of them, this
was the first time they had ever thought this way!
the real story is what happened to me. I did the exercise right along with them
on many occasions, writing my dreams and visions in detail. In my letter to a
friend, I had moved to the country, built my own home, authored a book, and started my own business. Over
the next ten years, something magic happened. All my dreams and visions became a reality, almost
as if arranged by an unseen hand. I did write books and start my business. We
did move to the country and I did build my own home.

gardening business in 2020 and it’s really taken off. ”
to describe all the details as if they have already happened. Write to a real

I hated dinner parties. But
I decided to give them another shot because I’m in London. And my friend
Mallery invited me. And because dinner parties in London are very different
from those in New York, “I’m having a dinner party” means: “I’m booking a table
for 12 at a restaurant and we’ll be sharing the cheque evenly (平均地), no matter what you eat.” In
Manhattan there is always someone who leaves before the bill arrives. They’ll
throw down cash, half of what they owe, and then people like me, who don’t
drink, end up paying even more. But if you try to use the same trick, the
hostess will shout: “Where are you going ?” And I cannot say I have somewhere
to go because everyone knows I have nowhere to go.
&&&&&& But in London, dinner parties are in people’s homes. Not only that, the guests are an interesting
mix. The last time I went to one, the guests were from France, India, Denmark and N it was like a gathering at the United Nations. In New York, the mix is less striking. It’s like a gathering at Bloomingdatle’s, a well-known
department store.
&&&&&& For New
Yorkers, talking about other parts of the world means Brooklyn and Queens in New York. But at Mallery’s, when I said that I had been to Myanmar recently, people knew
where it was, while In New York people would think it was a usual club.

parties in New York?

In the animal kingdom,
weakness can bring about aggression(侵略)in other animals. This sometimes happens with humans as well. But I
have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people. I see it every
day when people hold doors for me, pour cream into my coffee, or help me to put
on my coat. And I have discovered that it makes them happy.
&&&&&& From my
wheelchair experience, I see the best in people, bur sometimes I feel sad
because those who appear independent miss the kindness I see daily. They don’t
get to see this soft side of others often and we try every way possible to
avoid showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But only when
we stop pretending we’re brave or strong do we allow people to show the
kindness that’s in them.
&&&&&& Last month,
when I was driving home on a busy highway, I began to feel unwell and drove
more slowly than usual. People behind me began to get impatient and angry, with
some speeding up alongside me, horning (按喇叭) or even shouting at me. At the moment I decided to do something I
had never done in twenty years of driving. I put on the car flashlights and
drove on at a really low speed.
&&&&&& No more angry
shouts and no more horns!
&&&&&& When I put on
my flashlights, I was saying to other drivers, “I have a problem here. I am
weak and doing the best I can.” And everyone understood. Several times, I saw
drivers who wanted to pass. They couldn’t get around me because of the stream
of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited,
knowing the driver in front of them was in some way weak.
&&&&&& Sometimes
situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don’t feel that
way. But more often, it would be better if we don’t pretend we feel strong when
we feel weak or pretend that we are brave when we are scared.
60. The author has discovered that people will feel
happy when ______.
&A. they offer their help
&B. they receive others’ help
&C. they feel others’ kindness
&D. they show their weakness
61. The author feels sad sometimes because ______.

people view a bad situation as a disaster. It’s not. It’s an opportunity. Once
your old world collapses(倒塌), you can recover and rebuild. Now you
have the chance to start fresh and do things more intelligently. I built my
business on an unstable structure. I kept it going for years, but the business collapsed
last year. I had to leave my office, selling off all the furniture and
equipment. I got kicked out of my apartment because I couldn’t pay the rent. I
couldn’t pay my bills or debt. I declared bankruptcy.(破产)
years there was the worry that this might happen if I didn’t keep straining(尽力) to keep the business going. And my worries were
right. What I worried about would happen did happen .But you know what? Going
through that experience wasn’t really so bad. It was interesting. Some of it
was actually pretty easy. Throughout most of it, I felt increasing relief and a
renewed sense of freedom and possibility. All the old baggage was gone.
No more office. Fewer& possessions. Fewer obligations. No more debt. Most
of all , no more straining. Life became a lot easier.
got a cheaper and smaller apartment. I became debt-free. I learned to live
within my means. Those were actually good things. The others were just
feelings. The reality wasn’t actually painful. After that, I kept going with
the same business but completely changed the business model. I avoided the
earlier mistakes, and that business recovered just fine and worked great. It
was profitable every year from then on. But I had to go through the collapse
first to reach that point.
you’ve been feeling out of control with your current work or lifestyle, and you’re
currently straining to keep it going ,consider letting it go. Try allowing the
old world to collapse, many or all of your fears and worries might actually
come to pass, but that’s ok. You don’t have to keep the old world alive. If it
keeps falling apart on you ,let it collapse. Experiencing the collapse isn’t as
bad as fearing the collapse
The author regards the collapse of the old world as an opportunity

A. get a new world started in better ways
B. turn to others for help to save ourselves

A. the freedom and possibility of refreshing himself
B. the experience he learned from his former failure
C. the old possessions and the invisible pressure
D. the business knowledge and skills he got from various media
What did the author do after his business failed last year?
A. He cleverly transformed his business model.
B. He started another completely different business.
C. He received further training about doing business at college
&&& D. He borrowed some money from his
friends and relatives to pay off his debts.

&& When I first told people I was going to
work in Cameroon, the most common reaction was:“Why?” The second was:“It’s in
Africa;you’ll die!” The
third: “Where is that?” So let me give some
answers. I was offered a job that looked interesting in a part of the world I’d
never been to before. I’d also long had an interest in Africa, so I decided it
was time to
find out the reality. A small amount of research showed that in more than 40 years
since gaining independence, Cameroon has been a peaceful country with no wars. Not
only were there no wars but Cameroon is a food exporter to the region.
&& &Now, after three years, I can say
that these have been the healthiest years of my life! No malaria or any of the
other frightening diseases you read about when Africa is mentioned .The worst
thing that ever happened to me was a bout of food poisoning-once.
& &&&&So what is it like to
teach here? Well not surprisingly, not so different from anywhere else. Most
students come to us with a bit of English in their heads. Cameroon is a bilingual country with French and English as official languages, while there
are also close to 200 local ethnic languages in a country of 16 million people.
French is the dominant language, spoken by about eighty percent of the
population.
&& &The local school system is very
traditional and somewhat strict. Perhaps not surprisingly when there can be up
to 150 students in the classroom ( of which maybe 30 have the books, &and
there are probably seats for 70).Like
anywhere, students appreciate it if you know a bit about their country, and not
just Roger Milla (top scorer of the 1990 World Cup, in case you’re wondering). It
helps if you know the names of the ten provinces, know who the first president was,
or can say a word in a local language.
&& So in conclusion: Cameroon isn’t just football.
Nor is it war, poverty and disease. It’s just life and people, like anywhere
21. On hearing the writer’s decision, most

A.peaceful after liberation
B.a country full of
C.a poor country,

A. Food export may lead to many frightening diseases.
B.Most students in Cameroon do not need books.
C.Cameroon is not as bad as people commonly believed.

Thirsty? Think twice before you drink. You won’t believe
what it’s doing to you once it’s in your mouth and body.
Some foods are fine indoderation适度,
but soda isn’t one of them.”You may not think a soda every day is an issue,”
says researcher Frances Fleming Milici, “but just one eight- ounce soda every
day increases your chances of becoming obese by 60 percent.” Another problem
with soda is that it doesn’t make you feel as full as you’d be after eating the
same number of calories. So you end up taking in more calories than your body
needs, which leads to extra pounds.
Beverage companies deny that their drinks are to blame for
obesity. They say soda can be part of a healthy lifestyle. Coca-Cola has even
started an anti-obesity campaign called “Coming Together”. Our
goal is to provide education and awareness about nutrition,” says Ben Sheidler,
a spokesman for Coca-Cola. “Coca-Cola is committed to helping solve the obesity
problem by offering more choices, no and low calorie beverage options, clearly
communicating the calorie content of our products, and supporting physical
activity and nutrition education programs”.
Public health experts aren’t impressed. “Coca-Cola can’t
afford to ignore th it would make them look bad,” says Dr.David
Katz, director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center. “ but they
can’t afford to go out of business either. They are looking for a way to take
credit for doing good while staying focused on making money.” And what about
soda companies claiming that the real culprit罪魁祸首 behind
obesity is inactivity? “Soda can pour hundreds of calories down the throat in a
matter of seconds,” says Katz. “It is far easier to out-eat exercise than to
out-run all those extra calories.” In fact, you’d need to walk quickly for 60
minutes to work off just one 20-ounce bottle of soda.
These widespread health concerns have had a real impact:
Sales of soda in the US have gone flat among both kids and grown-ups. A recent
study found that the number of kids drinking no soda at all is now more than 30
