Course Content
What will you study?At the heart of the course lies the scientific approach to supporting athletes to perform at their peak, while reducing the risk of injury. Alongside this, we will teach you how to plan and prepare physical education and coaching sessions in line with national minimum expected standards and strengthen your confidence in implementing a range of teaching, learning and coaching styles. Understanding coaching roles and responsibilities is essential if a coach is to successfully lead and support people to improve sports performance. You will also develop an in-depth understanding of physiological, psychological and biomechanical theories, and how they can be used to assist performance enhancement.This pathway is aimed at those who wish to pursue a career in teaching sport after graduation. Like all of our sports pathways, you can either apply directly to this course, or apply to the&general&BSc Sport and Exercise Science&programme&and choose your final award at the end of year two.&A large part of your studies will be practice-based at our Allianz Park site, and you will take part in 150 hours of clinical practice through two work placements.What will you gain?&You will graduate, armed with the knowledge and understanding of:Sports psychology and how to work effectively with sports peopleThe nutritional needs of the physically active and professional athletesThe techniques and procedures used to assess physical fitness and well-beingThe basic effects of pharmacological agents on exercise performance, disease and healthResearch methods and processes with particular relevance to exercise and healthModules
Fundamentals of Anatomy and Human Movement
(30 Credits)

This module aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge of clinical and functional anatomy. Exploration of the microscopic and macroscopic structure of nerves, muscles, joints, bone and provides a fundamental platform upon which to build understanding of applied biomechanics and human movement.
Fundamentals of Health and Fitness
(30 Credits)

The sport rehabilitator or sport trainer will need to be aware of the benefits and adverse consequences of physical activity. S/he will also need to be aware of the role of physical activity in the development and maintenance of health, fitness and in optimising sports performance. The future professional role of a trainer may involve caring for a range of individuals, from the elite athlete through to special populations using exercise as a clinical intervention. The module aims to provide an introduction to core concepts developed later in the program, stimulate an interest in current issues in athletic health care and encourage the development of appropriate administrative, communication and practical skills required for successful academic and professional progress.
Fundamentals of Sport and Exercise Science

Professional Skills Development and Work Experience

Applied Physiology and Biomechanics

This module aims to enable students to understand the physiological basis of human movement from the cortex to skeletal muscle. To understand the mechanical basis of human movement from Newton s laws to the kinematics and kinetics of sport, exercise, and rehabilitation. To understand the chronic physiological adaptations to sport, exercise and rehabilitation. To understand the principles of measurement in muscle, vascular and cardiopulmonary physiology. To understand the principles of measurement in the kinetics and kinematics of human movement.
Applied Sport Exercise Science Research Methods
(30 Credits)

To introduce students of health and social care related subjects to the process of health and social care research. It is a professional requirement for those working in health and social care related disciplines to underpin their knowledge with research and evidence-based practice. Professionals need to be able to access research findings, and through an understanding of the research process and methodology, be able to critique research and apply this knowledge to practice. The aim of this module is to develop the students awareness the research process and to equip them with the skills required in the subject area appropriate to their target award and to offer some preparation for the final year project/dissertation.
Applied Sport Health Coaching

The module introduces the theoretical concepts of sports and health coaching in a practically orientated way. Students will experience different coaching styles in a variety of sporting and fitness situations and have the opportunity to plan, deliver, evaluate, and modify coaching sessions. The module also offers opportunities to further develop ethical issues and aspects of health and safety.
Applied Sports and Exercise Psychology
(30 Credits)

This module integrates psychology theory with sport and exercise to explore how performance can be optimised. The first part of the module focuses on psychological and personal factors that affect performance, physical activity, exercise and sporting achievements. The module then progresses on to psychological skills training and the development of a sport psychology framework, focusing on specific techniques that can improve performance. The module provides the individual with a theoretical understanding of factors that underpin working with athletes and exercisers through practical exercises as well as psychological sport and exercise tests. The later part of the module provides an understanding for those working in sport, exercise, and rehabilitation on how psychological and socio-cultural issues impact on recovery from injury and illness and explores the importance of lifestyle management in working with those recovering from injury.
Advanced Sport and Exercise Science

The aim of the module is to highlight and introduce the advanced key scientific Principles and contemporary topics, across the three main sports science disciplines of physiology, psychology and biomechanics.
Dissertation
(60 Credits)

This module aims to synthesise learning from the students undergraduate programme providing an opportunity for students to study independently and investigate a topic in depth. It foster an inquiry based approach, the employment and application of research skills thus facilitating the development of a higher level of theorising. Students will select a topic of personal interest on which they wish to undertake a substantial in-depth study. They will manage their own learning during this module, with the support of an allocated supervisor for this period if independent study.
Advanced Teaching and Coaching Sport
(30 Credits)

This module will aim to give Students an understanding of the necessary Physical Education and coaching standards, systems and guidelines required within the administration process of teaching and coaching. To develop and extend students knowledge, understanding and confidence in the delivery of a range of physical activities and sports at Key Stage 1-4 5-16yrs . To create an extensive provision of physical activities and sport teaching and coaching materials that examines and encourages progression and development of teaching and coaching skills. Students will gain an understanding of analysing and developing any physical skills from its simple origin through its most complexes and advanced form.
Teaching and learningWork placements are an important part of this course. You will spend 30 hours on a placement in both your first and second years, plus some tim the placements will focus on coaching groups or individuals and could be with a fitness centre, a sports club or a sports development project. You will produce reports and logbooks based on your experiences. We will help you find your placements.You will also attend lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions and practical clinical sessions, and take part in group discussions, group work and presentations. You will supplement all this with your own guided and independent reading, and will put together a portfolio of work.AssessmentYou will be assessed through exams, projects and your learning portfolio and logbook, as well as written assignments, including laboratory reports and case study analyses, presentations and supervisor reports. As well as getting feedback on your work from other students, you will be asked to evaluate your own work.

We normally make offers on a minimum of 280 tariff points from A levels (including at least one Science subject), BTEC or Access / Advanced Progression Diplomas at equivalent to the above. What are the career options with a degree in Sport and Exercise Science (Teaching and Coaching sport)?

There are career opportunities in teaching and research. Successful graduates also have an enhanced opportunity to gain a place on our highly competitive PGCE programme.&
Upon graduation, students can continue with their professional studies taking British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) training programmes to qualify in three years as an accredited sports and exercise scientist. Suitable graduates can also study to become physiotherapists or sports rehabilitators.
Our BSc Sport & Exercise Science (Teaching & Coaching) graduates have gone on to work in a wide range of roles in organisations including: Teaching Personnel, Middlesex University, London Metropolitan University, Twyford CofE School, Nightingale Academy, Lee Valley School, Box Clubber, and Willesden Sports Centre.

What about work placements?
You will complete 50 hours of placement across your three years of study and will receive help in identifying a suitable placement, and with applications if required. Placement opportunities exist in the following areas: Sports Clubs, University Sports Clubs, local sports development projects, Charities, Fitness Centres and Schools.&

Course content
A feature of the course will be the practical application of theory to realistic coaching environments and also to develop links to the coaching industry at all levels from community to elite coaches and coach educators. In addition to this, and recognising that coaching is fundamentally a social process involving human interaction, the degree will provide opportunities to study coaching in a variety of contexts and social settings, as well as in a wide range of activities.
The content of the degree course will draw on key coaching principles, including an examination of coaching practice and coaching process. In addition sports science principles will relate psychology and physiology to coaching and performance, while sociological aspects of sport and sports coaching and performance analysis at both a technical and tactical level will be examined.
Whatever combination you choose, you will graduate with a diverse range of skills, knowledge and experiences which are in high demand by the sport coaching industry.
During the course you will cover performance analysis, sports psychology and sociology, coaching sporting elites, sports physiology and coaching procedures and practices. As you progress through the course you will be able to select modules that reflect your interests.

Career opportunities
The degree is aimed at students who specifically want to pursue a career within sports coaching, which includes employment by a local authority, a sport governing body or within the education sector. Depending on your option choices you will also gain skills to pursue a career within the armed forces as a PTI, sports coach educator or sports development (coaching focus). You could also choose to progress on to a Postgraduate Certificate of Education or a masters course.

Assessment
A wide range of assessment methods will be used to test your knowledge and understanding. This includes essays, portfolios, practical coaching sessions, reports, presentations, online discussions and case study evaluations. You will be assessed on your ability to analyse coaching activities, use specialist video software, undertake lab-based work and conduct independent research. You will be expected to complete a dissertation as part of your final assessment.

Students have the opportunity to study these&courses as a four-year degree including a foundation year. If you do not meet the entry requirements for the three-year bachelors degree you should consider this degree. By incorporating a foundation year, we can bring you up to speed for the demands of a full three-year degree.
If you successfully complete the foundation year, you will be guaranteed a place on the full degree and will join as a first-year student. As the foundation year is not a stand-alone qualification, but part of a programme of study for an honours degree, UK students are eligible to apply for a student loan. The government fee grant for Welsh-domiciled students will also apply.

What you will study
You will study two generic core modules Study Skills and Contemporary Issues as well as the subject-specific modules listed below:
Introduction to Sport, Exercise Science and Human Performance& -Introduces the student to theories and approaches used within sport and exercise science and relates their application to sport, exercise and human performance settings. The students will explore psychological and physiological approaches to the sport & exercise environment. Explore a range of theories and assessment methods used within the sport & exercise environment and provide definitions and understanding of the key theories within sport and exercise science.
Introduction to Sports Coaching Concepts - Support the identification of the key roles and responsibilities examine coaching practice in a range of performance environments and be able to describe key pedagogical concepts.
The Performance Environment - introduce students to a range of performance environments, sports and physical activities. It will support the students in the application of knowledge of a range of sports and exercise performance environments and the development of a personal performance profile.
Negotiated Learning Group Research Project - Essential for the personal and professional development and for future employer requirements this module will enable students to gain knowledge and understanding of the well established principles and research in areas of psychology and of the way in which those principles and research have developed and are applied in a practical way.
