Since the 1970s, when the field of color psychology was born, a whole color industry has sprung up, advising governments to paint jails pink to paint jails pink to comfort prisoners and fast-food chains to decorate in orange to get customers to eat quickly. However, scientists are not 100%sure that people always associate the same colors with the same moods.
In 1973, Francis M. Adams and Charles E. Osgood, two scientists at the University of Illinois, interviewed people from 23 cultures about how colors made them feel. Red gave the most universal associations of strength, vitality and activity. Black was ranked “strong” and “bad”; gray was “bad” and “weak”; white, blue and green were generally ranked “good”; yellow was “weak”. This study gave about a 70% rate of agreement and was the basis for modern color psychology.
Different cultures report different associations for certain colors. In Asia, mourners wear white. In India, brides wear red. In the United States, brides wear white, and black is the color of mourning. Also, some colors have double associations. In Catholicism, the pope(教皇) often wears a red robe—but the devil often has red skin.
In other studies, scientists hypothesized that the wavelengths of color (short waves are red, long waves are violet) interact with people’s hormonal systems to change their moods. This theory was called into question by the fact that the same colors can be produced in many different ways. Thus, the wave pattern for two seemingly identical patches of color might be different—even if they are felt by the observer to spark the same mood.
Color affects efficiency. In a study, “The Effect of Appropriate and Inappropriate Stimulus Color on Odor Discrimination,” people trying to perform a task under blue or green lights did much worse than people whose task was lit by white, orange or red lights.
Clearly, color does affect mood, but most of the facts are yet to be discovered. So if you’re decorating your environment, it might be best to pick colors that produce the desired moods.

D. anxious.

A. Red and black.

A. someone he knows has passed away.
B. one of his relatives has just married.
C. he must be a pope in Catholicism.
D. he likes the color better than others.
24. How is the passage organized?
A. Question→Analysis→Solution.
B. Idea→Evidence→Restating the idea.
C. Argument→discussion→Conclusion.
D. Phenomenon→Evidence→Analysis.
Treetops, the hotel in the trees, is famous in the world. People know little about Kenya, but they know of Treetops. When King George VI died, Princess Elizabeth was staying on the Treetops, and when she came down from there, She succeeded him as the queen of the country.
The hotel is in the middle of the forest, and it shows the pleasure of Africa. When you visit it, you will be sent into the heart of the forest by hotel buses, and then a guide, with a gun to protect you against big animals, will go with you to the Treetops. Before and after dinner, for the whole night if you wish, you can sit on the corridor(走廊), watching animals come to the water pool. The earliest hotel Treetops was built round a large tree on the opposite side of the water, but that was destroyed by fire and the new hotel Treetops, which was built round several trees, is much bigger.
The dining room at Treetops is small, and the waiters cannot walk round to serve guests, so a clever “railway service” has been invented. Guests take their food as it passes slowly in front of them, along a line in the center of the table.
There are many animals around the Treetops. When you visit them, you can see:
——Animals and their babies are waiting to greet the guests.
——Animals, enjoying the Treetops pool in the daylight.
——A long bodied, long ring tailed very active cat-like animal is a special one coming out at night. He hunts and eats anything he can catch and is very destructive. He lives in the trees at Treetops. He comes for his food every evening. Do not get too near to him, as his teeth and claws(爪)can do you harm. These animals can be trained and become lovely pets.

27. We can learn from the text that the guests

The Internet Company Google is testing its newest high-tech device, Google Glass. The company describes the glasses as wearable computers that would change the way people view others and the world.
The glasses have a tiny video screen and a camera that connect wirelessly to the Internet through WIFI, a smartphone, or a tablet computer. You can make and receive calls, send and receive texts, take pictures, record video or search the web. You control Google Glass using your voice, and a touchpad on the right arm of the frame.
Professor Marcia Dawkins is among a select group of people who have been given a chance to test out Google Glass. “I thought this is something I definitely need for my classroom and hopefully for my personal life too.”
Professor Marcia Dawkins is among a select group of people who have heen given a chance to test out Google Glass.
The Professor's Google Glass looks like a pair bright orange glasses, without the actual glass. But there’s a tiny rectangular (矩形) glass at the top right-hand corner. Through that glass, she has been recording video while biking. She also has been able to talk to her sister in Thailand, and she plans to use the device to teach a public speaking class.
But not everyone is excited about Google Glass. Some are concerned about possible risks to privacy. John Simpson is the director of the privacy project at Consumer Watchdog.
He said, “It is essentially going to allow people to come in and spy on you and record that, without you knowing what is going on.”
Google says that it has already addressed that concern. Chris Dale, who is the Senior Manager of Communications for Google Glass, explained that in order to start the camera or record a video, the owner must say something out loud.
But Filmmaker Chris Barrett showed just how easy it is to record people without them knowing it. His glass captured a man getting arrested after a fight. He shared the video on You Tube.
Also, some are concerned about the use of facial recognition technology on Google Glass. But Google says it will not approve the use of such applications. The Internet company says it is still testing its new device, it hopes to make Google Glass available to the public by early next year.

Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships. For example, in American culture the smile is in general an expression of pleasure. Yet it also has other uses. A woman’s smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child. A smile may show love or politeness. It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion (困惑) across cultures. For example, many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even improper. Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places (although this is less common in big cities). Some Russians believe that Americans smile some Americans believe that Russians don’t smile enough. In Southeast Asian cultures, a smile is frequently used to cover painful feelings. Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile.
Our faces show emotions (情感), but we should not attempt to “read” people from another culture as we would “read” someone from our own culture. The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as members of another do does not mean that they do not experience emotions. Rather, there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressiveness permitted. For example, in public and in formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do. When with friends, Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly.
It is difficult to generalize about Americans and facial expressiveness because of personal and cultural differences in the United States. People from certain cultural backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others. The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits, we may make the mistake of “reading” the other person incorrectly.
32. What does the smile usually mean in the US?
B. Politeness.
D. Thankfulness.
33. The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to prove that a smile can ___ .
A. show friendliness to strangers
B. be used to hide true feelings
C. be used in the wrong places
D. show personal habits
34. What should we do before attempting to “read” people?
A. Learn about their relations with others.
B. Understand their cultural backgrounds.
C. Find out about their past experience.
D. Figure out what they will do next.
35. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Cultural Differences
B. Smiles and Relationship
C. Facial Expressiveness
D. Habits and Emotions
