One of the key vehicles for promoting and engendering this capability is the learning of languages additional to English. However, just as language learning is being called upon to deliver education for citizenship in super-diverse contexts, many countries are experiencing a decline in the numbers of students studying languages. A particularly important time for decision-making and reassessment of whether to continue with language learning is the transition point between secondary and tertiary education. This paper takes Japanese learning in New Zealand as a case study to illustrate the issues languages students struggle with as they negotiate this transition. Japanese is an important additional language of education, particularly in the Asia Pacific region, where Japan has been seen as a major political and economic power through much of the post-Second World War period. In a previous study, we analysed the mainly affective reasons why erstwhile successful students of Japanese may drop the language when they move on to tertiary study. In the current paper, we examine the other core category emerging from our research: the view that ‘Japanese and the major are incompatible’. This category considers the academic, institutional and organisational reasons why students feel they are unable to continue with Japanese when they move to tertiary education.Authors:, Sharon HarveyThe Language Learning Journal/RoutlegdeStudent attrition and falling tertiary education enrolments afflict languages education across the ‘inner circle’ English speaking world. In the southern hemisphere, in New Zealand and Australia, Japanese has become one of the most successful languages of education. However, numbers of students are now declining. This paper examines why successful secondary school students of Japanese as a foreign language (FL) in New Zealand who have not chosen Japanese as a major, do not continue their study of Japanese at university or another tertiary educational institution. It utilises a grounded theory approach to explain an area of language learning and attrition which is not currently well understood: the transition stage between secondary school and tertiary education. Analysis of interview data of former secondary students of Japanese revealed two core categories that explain why successful secondary students drop Japanese when they leave high school: the participants' ‘concept of learning Japanese’ and ‘the incompatibility of Japanese and the major’. In this paper, we look at the first of these categories in depth in order to explore these mainly affective reasons for post secondary school students not continuing Japanese at tertiary level. It is hoped our paper will prove instructive for other jurisdictions which are witnessing a decline in their Japanese language students and language students more generally.Authors:, Sharon HarveyLanguagesJapaneseNative or bilingual proficiencyEnglishNative or bilingual proficiencyKoreanElementary proficiencySkillsEducationApplied Language Studies, Master of Arts (MA)Language Teaching, Graduate Diploma, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor of Science (BS)

2 Diocesan School for Girls. 3 St Cuthbert‘s College. 4 Kristin School. 5 King’s College. 6 St Mary‘s College. 7 Carmel College. 8 Epsom Girls Grammar School. 9 Baradene College. 10 St Kentigern College.
2 St Mary’s College. 3 Sacred Heart College. 4 Dilworth School. 5 Carmel College. 6 Marist College. 7 St Dominic‘s College. 8 Rodney College. 9 Mt Roskill Grammar School.

…… 14. Epsom Girls’GrammarSchool:这是一所在华人社群非常著名的公立女子中学,NECA 通过率为84.1,排名在第14位,基本在二线水准,在它之前还有Western Springs College(公立学校,奥克兰中西区,教育部评分8分),Rosmini College(公立天主教会混合高中,北岸Devenport-Takapuna区域,教育部评分9分),Westmount School(男女混合私校,位于中南区Onehunga,评分8分),ElimChristian College(位于东区Botany ,公立教会学校,评分8分;Marist College,位于中西区Mount Albert,公立天主教女子学校,教育部评分为7分)等5所高中,当然,如果只在公立女子中学里面,NECA通过率排在第一;在奥克兰全部公立学校里面,Western Springs College排在EGGS前面,不过,这是一所男女混合高中,EGGS在女子公立学校里面依然可以捍卫其著名公校的荣誉,但包含私校则排在第14位,二线水准。 17.
