随着渴望去香港读研的学生的不断增加, 许多背景不足的学生, 开始把目光转向了竞争相对不那么激烈的社会学方向。但是, 由于社会在内地刚刚起步, 很多学生与家长对社会学不是特别了解, 往往会把社会工作者误认为是慈善机构的义工或者是社区的居委会大妈。事实上, 社会学背景的毕业生在香港需求量非常高, 在港从业者超过万人。在内地, 社会学也已逐渐得到了广泛关注, 相信在未来的若干年, 会有很大的就业空间。
社会学的作用以及研究领域：
社会学是处理人与社会问题的工作。主要旨在提高居民生活质量, 解决各个阶层的社会问题, 不仅包括弱势群体, 也包含普通家庭问题、青少年问题等, 以实现个人与社会的和谐。其研究领域包括社会学概论、社区工作实务、社会心理学等。以社会工作专业为例来看下其课程设置。

由于社工在香港本地的大量需求, 很多学生都可在毕业后留港工作, 也可在社工发展迅速的上海深圳等地寻求社会工作方向的相关工作。主要在民政、劳动、社会保障和卫生部门，及工会、青年、妇女等社会组织及其他社会福利、服务和公益团体等机构从事社会保障、社会政策研究、社会行政管理、社区发展与管理、社会服务、评估与操作等工作.
