第三部分& 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AA book review tells not only what a book is about, but also how successful it is at what it is trying to do. Professors often assign book reviews as practice in careful analytical reading. As a reviewer, you bring together the two strands of accurate, analytical reading and strong personal response when you indicate what the book is about and what it might mean to a reader (by explaining what it meant to you). In other words, reviewers answer not only the WHAT but the SO WHAT question about a book. Thus, in writing a review, you combine the skills of describing what is on the page, analyzing how the book tried to achieve its purpose, and expressing your own reactions. Most book reviews start with a heading that includes all the basic information about the book, like: title, author, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, and number of pages.Like most pieces of writing, the review usually begins with an introduction that lets your readers know what the review will say. The first paragraph usually includes the author and title again, so your readers don’t have to look up to find this information. You should also include a very brief description of the contents of the book, the purpose or audience for the book, and your reaction and evaluation. Then you move into a section of background information that helps place the book in context and discusses how to judge the book. Next, you should give a summary of the main points, quoting and explaining key phrases from the author. Finally, you get to the heart of your review ― your evaluation of the book. In this section, you might discuss some of the following issues:•How well the book has achieved its goal.•What possibilities are suggested by the book.•What the book has left out.•How the book compares with others on the subject.•What specific points are not convincing.•What personal experiences you’ve had related to the subject. It is important to use labels to carefully distinguish your views from the author’s, so that you don’t confuse your reader. Then, like other essays, you can end with a direct comment on the book, and tie together issues raised in the review in a conclusion. There is, of course, no set form, but a general rule is that the first one-half to two-thirds of the review should summarize the author’s main ideas and at least one-third should evaluate the book.56. According to the text, personal response of a book reviewer refers to __________.A. accurate and analytical readingB. skills of describing what is on the page C. the reviewer’s indication of what the book isD. the reviewer’s indication of what the book meant to a reader57. What is the most important of a book review?A. The heading.&& &&&&&&&&&& B. The evaluation.&C. The conclusion.&& &&&&&&&&& D. The introductions.58. What does the text mainly tell us?A. Steps to read a book.&&&&&&&&& B. Tips for writing a book review.C. The way to develop your idea.&&&&&&& D. Things not to be avoided in a book review.BThe power of humor and laugher is numerous. They entertain us and make us feel good. But, above all, we have discovered that humor and laughter are the best medicine. They relieve pain, reduce stress and anxiety, and are anti-aging and longevity facilitators. They are extremely necessary for helping us to find and maintain a balance between life and work. However, they are slipping away from us. We have become far too serious. The only ones who still enjoy humor, laughter, fun and play to the fullest are young children. Children tend to laugh an average of 200 times a day. For adults, however, it is a totally different story. In the 1950s people laughed on average 18 times a day. Today, we are lucky if we average between 4-6 times a day.As a matter of fact, a recent study found that people laugh 6 more times in the presence of one person but 30 more times in a group of people. You can get a chuckle(咯咯笑) from jokes you get on the Internet, but it is not the same as belly jiggling laughter (a deep laugh) you get when you interact with others.Socializing with friends and relatives was much looked forward to. However, this is no longer the case. In fact, the majority of people can hardly find time, nor do they have the inclination towards socializing outside home. They turn to electronic media such as television, computers, the Internet, videos, CDs, and audio equipment, which can provide them with instant self-entertainment at the push of a button. The workplace does not fare(进展) much better. Due to the pressures to produce more in the same or fewer hours available and to compete, for example, in a manufacturing field with cheaper labor elsewhere in the world, humor and laughter in the workplace have gradually eroded(逐渐毁坏) away.I have developed a real appreciation, perhaps closer to a strong desire for the power of humor and laughter. This encouraged me to write my first book titled “The Power of Humor” and subsequently my second book titled “Kids Say the Goggonest Things” based on the natural humor, laughter, play and fun that kids experience and they freely share with parents, grandparents and teachers. From writing about humor and laughter, people start to ask me to speak up for them. To date, I have developed a number of humor-laughter topics that I use in my keynote presentations. You are invited to subscribe to my free monthly e-magazine “The Humormeister’s Forum” by clicking on the Free Humor E-zine navigation button on the website.59. According to the author, laughter is leaving us partly because ________.A. we treat everything in a serious way B. it relieves pain, reduces stress and anxiety C. we fail to maintain balance between life and workD. the pace of change in our lives is becoming faster60. The fourth paragraph mainly tells us that ________.A. getting a deep laugh nowadays is difficult B. we can entertain ourselves with the help of the InternetC. people laugh more heartily when spending time with others D. researchers have made a new discovery about the effect of laughter61. The underlined word “inclination” in Paragraph 5 most probably means “________”.A. destination&&&& &B. tendency&&&& &&C. attitude&&&&& &&D. approach62. Which of the following articles can we most probably find in “The Humormeister’s Forum”?A. The power of honesty.&&B. Don’t be your own worst enemy.C. Live life purposefully: The relationship within.D. Funny Christmas stories to share with your loved ones.CConventional wisdom says that hardship can make us old before our time. In fact, a new study suggests that violence not only leaves long-term scars on children’s bodies, but also changes their DNA, causing changes that are equal to seven to ten years of premature aging.Scientists measured this by studying the ends of children’s chromosomes(染色体), called telomeres, says Idan Shalev, lead author of a study published in Molecular Psychiatry.Telomeres are special DNA sequences which prevent the DNA in chromosomes from separating. They get shorter each time a cell divides, until a cell cannot divide any more and dies.Several factors have been found to shorten telomeres, including smoking, radiation and psychological stresses such as being treated badly when young and taking care of a chronically ill person. In this study, researchers examined whether exposure to violence could make children’s telomeres shorten faster than normal. They interviewed the mothers of 236 children at ages 5, 7 and 10, asking whether the youngsters had been exposed to domestic violence between the mo physical malt or bullying. Researchers measured the children’s telomeres―in cells obtained by swabbing the insides of their cheeks―at ages 5 and 10.Telomeres shortened faster in kids exposed to two or more types of violence, says Shalev. Unless that pattern changes, the study suggests, these kids could be expected to develop diseases of aging, such as heart attacks or memory loss, seven to 10 years earlier than their peers.Shalev says there is hope for these kids. His study found that, in rare cases, telomeres can lengthen. Better nutrition, exercise and stress reduction are three things that may be able to lengthen telomeres, he says. The study confirms a small &but& growing number of studies suggesting that early childhood adversity imprints itself in our chromosomes, says Charles Nelson, a professor of pediatrics and neuroscience at Harvard Medical School.63. The new study found that ________.A. hardship can change a child’s agingB. violence leaves scars on a child’s mindC. violence can speed up a child’s agingD. hardship has a long &term effect on a child’s mind64. According to the text, telomeres ________.A. are at the ends of people’s chromosomesB. can help prevent DNA from separatingC. can make a cell die quicklyD. become shorter before they die65. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?A. Violence can cause quick cell division in children’s body.B. Researchers measured the children’s telomeres from their legs in the study.C. Being treated badly will make a child’s telomeres shorten faster.D. Children who have shorter telomeres may have a heart attack earlier.66. What is the best title for the text?A. Violence Aging Children’s DNAB. Children’s Changing DNA PatternsC. Violence and TelomeresD. The Function of TelomeresDThis is an excerpt from Emma Watson’s speech at the United Nations headquarters.Today we are launching a campaign(called "He For She"). I am reaching out to you because we need your help. We want to end gender inequality, and to do this, we need everyone involved. This is the first campaign of this kind in the UN. We want to try to involve as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change. &&& I started questioning gender-based assumption a long time ago. When I was 8, I was confused being called bossy because I wanted to direct a play that we put on for our parents, but the boys were not. When I was 14, I started to be sexualized by certain elements of the media. At 15, my girlfriends started dropping out of a lot of sports teams because they didn’t want to appear masculine. At 18, my male friends were unable to express their feelings.&&& I decided that I was a feminist. This seemed uncomplicated to me. But my recent research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word. Women are choosing not to identify as feminists. Why has the word become such an uncomfortable one? I’m from Britain and I think it is right that I am paid the same as my male counterparts. I think it is right that I should make decisions about my own body. I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and decisions that will affect my life. I think it is right that socially, I am afforded the same respect as men.&&& But sadly, I can say that there is no one country in the world where all women can expect to receive these rights. No country in the world can yet say that they have achieved gender equality. These rights, I considered to be human rights, but I am one of the lucky ones.&&& My life is a sheer privilege because my parents didn’t love me less because I was born a daughter. My school did not limit me because I was a girl. My mentors didn’t assume that I would end up nowhere because I might give birth to a child one day. These influences were the gender equality ambassadors that made me who I am today. They may not know it but they are the inadvertent feminists who are changing the world today. We need more of those.Men, I would like to take this opportunity to extend you a formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue, too. Because to date, I’ve seen young men suffering from mental illness, unable to ask for help for fear it will make them less of a man, or less of men. I’ve seen men made fragile and insecure by distorted sense of what constitutes male success. Men don’t have the benefits of equality, either. Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive, both men and women should be free to be strong. This is what "HeForShe" is about. It’s about freedom.&&& You might be thinking: who is this Harry Potter girl? What is she doing at the UN? I’ve been asking myself at the same thing. All I know is that I care about this problem and I want to make it better. And having seen what I’ve seen and given the chance, I feel my responsibility to say something. Statesman Edmund Burke said all that is needed for the forces of evil to triumph is for good men and women to do nothing.&&& In my nervousness for this speech and in my moment of doubt, I told myself firmly: If not me, who? If not now, when? If you have similar doubts when opportunities are presented to you, I hope those words would be helpful. Because the reality is that if we do nothing, it will take 75 years, or for me it will be nearly 100 before women can be expected to be paid as same as men for the same work. 15.5 million girls will be married in the 16 years as children. At current rate, it will be until 2086 before all rural African girls can have secondary education. We are struggling for a uniting world, but the good news is we have a uniting movement. It is called “He For She”. I am inviting you to step forward, to be seen and to ask yourself: if not me, who? If not now, when?Thank you.67. The campaign “He For She” aims to ________.A. give women more freedom than men B. give men more freedom than womenC. involve everyone to struggle for the end of gender inequalityD. involve as many men and boys as possible to live a free life.68. We can know from Emma Watson’s personal experience that _________.A. feminism has become an unpopular word B. her parents didn’t love her because she was born a daughter C. she was called bossy because she didn’t want to appear masculineD. her mentors treated her the same way they treated boy students.69. What does the underlined sentence mean?A. Good men and women doing nothing leads to evil forces to develop.B. Good men and women need to do nothing to defeat evil forces.C. The victory of evil force leads to good men and women doing nothing.D. It is necessary for good men and women do nothing to combat evil forces.70. In the speech, Emma calls on people to ________.A. participate in the campaign actively and take actionsB. admit that men and women should be equally paidC. pay more attention to men suffering from mental illnessesD. believe in her although she acted in the Harry Potter series
第II卷 (三部分 共35分)第四部分 任务型阅读 (共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。注意:每空1个单词。In a fast changing world, people seldom see a device or equipment that lasts for a long time these days. There are always new inventions, different models, or upgrades cropping up one after the other and as consumers people highly anticipate the faster and better kind than what they already have. Therefore it is quite a surprise that a mini projector(投影仪) is still in use today not only in small scale businesses, schools, or homes but in big corporations and institutions as well. Sure it has a few additional features here and there but the main function is the same.A mini projector today has been fitted with top of the line parts and high quality materials to ensure its efficiency and performance can meet the demands of whoever it is for. It is so designed that it can be used indoors or outdoors with the same functions. The mini projector, as the name suggests, is handy and compact and can easily be brought anywhere by just one person. It can support a broader
USB and card readers are now installed to cope with the pieces of equipment that people use today to store data.It can be used at home where it can provide as a form of entertainment or start a conversation during family bonding times. The owner can easily use the mini projector to share with other members the photos and videos of one particular vacation, or just to play a series of beautiful landscapes.Offices also benefit from a mini projector especially during an important meeting or presentation. With at par resolution(标准的分辨率), employees can easily decipher(辨认) the text or data with the use of a mini projector, its bright LED light is sufficient enough to provide a bright and clear image without distortion(变形). Users can now bring this anywhere with them and can be especially useful on a location where the voltage(电压) is unknown.Perhaps one of the more common places where a mini projector is used constantly is in schools. Teachers or professors use this as an aid to a lesson or discussion to provide better visual aids than usual and to even deliver their lecture with the use of a mini projector and minimize the use of a board and writing pen. It is often said that children have a very short attention span but they remember things more when things are presented to them visually. This is the perfect use of a mini projector in classrooms where kids easily forget their lesson for the day. Teachers use this to show the class pictures or illustrations that tie with the topics for students to remember.

作文After two frogs fell into a deep pit, one died because of his companions' discouraging words while the other that mistook them for encouraging ones got out. So words have powerful effects on people's attitude towards life.We use words every day but not all of us realize their powerful influence. A student will spare no efforts to study because of others' inspiring words. On the contrary, if he is told that there is no possibility for him to succeed, he may really give up and end up as a failure totally. My friend Mary had a traffic accident and got severely hurt. Though the chances for her recovery were little, her mother decided to tell a lie in order to cheer her up. It was the power of words that actually helped her stand up and walk again. In conclusion, when faced with negative and discouraging remarks, we ought to turn a deaf ear to them as they will destroy our hope and faith. What matters more to us are those positive words that make us highly inspired and motivated. In the meantime, give our positive words to people around us because they will give us theirs in return.
听力录音稿Text 1 W: Oh, what a pretty dress! My daughter would love it. But it seems a bit too large. Do you have a smaller size?M: Sorry. This is the only one left. But don’t worry. Children grow fast!W: Yes, that’s true. I’ll take it.Text 2W: These DVDs will be due back on Thursday the 7th.M: How much more should we pay to keep them another week?Text 3M: What did you think of Dana’s speech today?W: Well, she must have spent a lot of time preparing it. I can’t believe I could sit for that long without feeling bored.Text 4W: Could you help us carry these boxes, sir?M: Oh, I’d like to help you, but I’ve got a pain in my back.Text 5W: I wonder if Simon will be here by 8. He’s supposed to be.M: His wife said he left at 7:30, so he should be here by 8:10 at the latest.
Text 6M: Are you free on the weekend?W: I haven’t got any plans yet. Why?M: There’s an exhibition of Chinese paintings at the public library. Would you like to go with me?W: I’d love to. But when?M: How about Saturday morning? It’s cooler in the morning, and may be less crowded.W: I’m afraid I cannot get up early on weekends. I prefer Saturday afternoon. Believe me, there won’t be too many people.M: So, shall we meet at 2 Saturday afternoon?W: Ok, that would be great. I’ll be waiting for you at my home.
Text 7W: Did you have a busy week?M: Um, well, no. I mean, I didn’t do a lot, but I bought a computer.W: You did? Thank goodness! Now you don’t need to borrow mine! You had it for two weeks last time.M: Yeah, so sorry about that. I wrote my history paper on it. Thanks again, by the way.W: Sure, no problem. So, how do you like your computer?M: Oh, it’s really cool. I use it every day.W: Really? Are you using it for class? I mean, you’re working on a paper now, right?M: Uh, yeah, I am. But I don’t use it for class. W: So, what do you use it for?M: Um, actually, I just watch DVDs on it all week.
Text 8W: Tom, as the manager of a company selling green products, you’re now quite a successful businessman. When did you know you wanted to have your own company?M: My family left Budapest in 1986 and settled in Canada, where a lot of my friends’ parents were highly successful businessmen. It seemed so cool! So, in high school, I started a web design company and learned a lot from that experience.W: How did you find the money for your present company, then?M: We’ve raised 18 million dollars from about 50 people. We’re finally making money. I own six percent of the company, and all employees get their shares.W: By the way, what aspects of your life are green?M: I’m only mildly green. I do simple things, and I’m a huge biker. I biked across Canada.W: Do you think you have ever done anything wasteful?M: We’re always doing something wrong, but then, that’s what allows us to learn and grow. When I first started out, we made all the products ourselves. But that was a mistake. Now, we work with other companies. We provide the materials, the product development, and the design. They make the products, and…
Text 9W: Hey, James. How’s the job search going?M: Hi, Sharon. I had no idea it would take so much time. It sure makes it difficult to prepare for final exams. How about you?W: I was lucky. There seems to be a shortage of high school teachers now. I applied to three schools, and each one offered me a position. M: That’s great. Which one did you like?W: I haven’t decided yet. Of course, it would be easiest for me to stay here in New York or go back home to Boston. But I may go to California.M: That would be a big move.W: So, tell me about your plans.M: Well, I applied to six newspapers. Last week, I had an interview with New York Times.W: How did it go?M: No so well. I think they’re looking for people with some experience. W: Have you had any other interviews?M: No, not yet. It seems that everyone wants to be a writer these days. There just aren’t that many jobs out there.W: That’s too bad. M: Yes. I had hoped to have a job lined up by graduation. That doesn’t seem likely now.W: What will you do if you can’t find a job?M: In that case, I’ll begin working on a master’s degree in the fall.W: Good luck!
Text 10M: Now, one more thing to add about student safety before we start today’s college tour. The university offers two programs called Safe Walk and College Alone programs. The Safe Walk program is to make sure that students get where they need to go late at night with an officer on duty to safeguard them, whether back from the bar or from a late-night study group. The College Alone program gives students who are working alone at night peace of mind. Once a student calls the office, her position is recorded, as is her time to leave the place and where she is about to go. Students are provided with a number they can call campus safety office 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And 12 college pay phones are also connected to the office ― no money needed. Here, we’re trying our best so that your children are safe while they’re attending the university.
